General Description:
The Sensor and Electronics Lab at HRL Laboratories is a highly talented team of scientists, engineers, and project managers, performing pioneering work on advanced technologies for commercial and government applications. We seek a self-motivated scientist / engineer with strong communication and leadership skills to serve as the Department Manager (2nd level manager) for the IR, GaN, & Interconnect Device Technologies Department. The role consists of roughly 20% management and 80% technical contributions.
Essential Duties:
Line management duties include managing resources (e.g. allocating team personnel to projects), talent acquisition (e.g. recruiting), performance management through informal and formal feedback, and additional department-wide, lab-wide, and company-wide assignments (e.g. business development and planning for capital investments), as well as providing critical feedback to staff.
Technical contributions should be aligned with the competencies and capabilities of the department, which include RF Gallium Nitride HEMTs, III-V infrared detectors, interconnect and integrated devices, and similar technologies, with emphasis on epitaxial deposition and/or device fabrication.
Specific technical assignments are dependent on background and interests of the selected candidate.
Required Skills:
6+ years’ experience in a role involving leadership of technical staff.
Demonstrated experience with successful resource allocation and management of technical projects.
Experience with epitaxial materials growth or microfabrication processes is needed.
Experience coaching front-line managers is a plus.
In-depth knowledge of a device technology area of current or future interest to the Sensors and Electronics Laboratory. This includes RF GaN HEMTs, III-V infrared detectors, and other related wafer-based technologies.
Deep technical understanding of the underlying device physics is preferred.
Knowledge of organizing and leading engineering teams is required.
Required Education:
MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or related scientific discipline

Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $182,720 - $234,168 + bonus + benefits.
