Job Description

The Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences (CIMS) at NREL is on the lookout for a researcher specializing in determining the cost, efficiency, and optimal design of hydrogen energy and infrastructure. The role entails conducting analyses of hydrogen systems from local to global scales, and determining the costs and benefits of integrating hydrogen into current and future energy systems. This includes the production of hydrogen from conventional and renewable energy sources, for use in electricity grids, transportation systems, and industrial processes such as ammonia, steel production, as well as broader decarbonization endeavors.

The team specializes in analyzing advanced vehicle infrastructure and integrated energy systems to meet federal and industry research needs. The desired candidate should have a background in data-driven modeling and techno-economic analysis, especially in hydrogen systems.  Substantial problem-solving and analytical skills are crucial. Engaging with diverse energy applications is beneficial for current tasks and essential for a future lead analyst role. The candidate should have experience in hydrogen systems analysis, software tool development, and strong communication skills. Previous experience with client interactions is an advantage.

The successful candidate will join a team focused on engineering-based modeling of the infrastructure essential for the expansion and commercialization of hydrogen technology. These applications aim at achieving deep decarbonization and growing the use of clean energy. This individual will employ and/or modify some of NREL’s existing hydrogen models and tools, namely H2FAST, StoreFAST, H2A, SERA, and RODeO (refer to NREL Hydrogen Data Tools). The role might also necessitate the creation of new models, and engineering, financial, or statistical programming will be a critical skill. Given the dynamic nature of hydrogen analysis, the capacity to acquaint oneself with and adapt to novel tools is imperative. Furthermore, the selected individual will bolster the surge in international hydrogen deployment and align with the group's strategic priorities, thereby supporting NREL’s overarching vision and strategy (https://www.nrel.gov/about/).

Key job responsibilities include:

  • Utilize established theories, principles, and concepts related to clean hydrogen production, compression, transport, and application. This includes its use as a transportation fuel, energy storage medium, electricity producer, tool for industrial decarbonization, and energy commodity.
  • Leverage existing models to extract analytical insights and contribute to the development of these models using programming languages like Python, R, and Julia.
  • Conduct comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure evaluations for projects within various hydrogen technology systems, such as medium and heavy-duty fuel cell vehicle electrification and hydrogen infrastructure planning.
  • Work collaboratively to undertake energy system modeling in areas including electricity grid analysis and hybrid energy systems.
  • Engage in discussions with current clients and team up with fellow researchers to deliver on project objectives.
  • Document findings in leading technical journals and conference materials and present research at conferences, symposiums, and sponsored review gatherings.
  • Support the Principal Investigator (PI) across multiple hydrogen technology analysis projects.
