Job Description:

Under the direction of the Manager and Director, the Educator (of HLD Operations) ensures that all roles in HLD (High-Level Disinfection) Operations across both LHMC campuses are properly trained and operate within the guidelines set forth by various industry standards and regulations (AAMI, AORN, TJC, DPH, CMS, etc.).  

The Educator is responsible for hands-on employee training and continuous assessments of skills and knowledge retention, in areas including decontamination, care and handling, sterile storage, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and standard precautions to ensure patient safety and to minimize department pain points related to quality of performance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

1)    With the CSPD Director and Manager of HLD Operations oversight; designs and delivers a comprehensive education program for new and experienced Instrument and HLD Technicians for the Burlington and Peabody Campuses.
2)    Orients, educates and develops new Technicians to assure competence and ability to fulfill specified responsibilities.
3)    Develop, review, and/or update annual HLD staff competencies for job roles defined by the CSPD Director and Manager of HLD Operations.
4)    Works with department leadership and designated trainers ensuring staff is trained in a systematic & documented approach using a “train the trainer model”.
5)    Collaborates with the department leadership and designated trainers to assess the learning needs and competencies of staff and various hospital personnel performing high-level disinfection.
6)    Engages actively in self-development to support expertise in the department and quality in the practice setting.
7)    Coordinates departmental in-services with instrument vendors as required.
8)    Maintains detailed record keeping of employee documents pertaining to their required certification and ongoing professional development.
9)    Educates various hospital personnel on pre-cleaning techniques for flexible endoscopes prior to and procedure on the cleaning and preparation for high-level disinfection.
10)    Represents HLD Operations with Hospital Infection Control at the request of the Director or Manager.
11)    Serves on departmental or hospital committees regarding HLD education, sterile processes, compliance, or regulatory concerns, as directed by the CSPD Director or Manager of HLD Operations.
12)    Researches new equipment, processes, or programs to assure compliance with sterile process regulatory requirements.
13)    Responds to emergent staffing challenges by working cooperatively with the Manager and Director to staff either campus and any shift as necessary and able.  Is available to occasionally provide hands-on education and training to off-shift colleagues.
14)    Complies with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, the policies and procedures of LHMC and the standards of any relevant accrediting organizations; participates actively in and abides by the requirements and adheres to the standards of LHMC’s compliance program.
15)     Incorporates LHMC Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities.
16)    Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.
17)    Demonstrates understanding the job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment.
18)    Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education, and maintains own educational records in support of credentialing requirements.
19)     Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.
 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree preferred

Licensure, Certification, Registration:  Requires CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certification & CER (Certified Endoscope Preprocessor) certification from HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) Or CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) certification & CFER (Certified Flexible Endoscope Preprocessor) from CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution)

Experience:

A minimum of 5 years of Sterile Processing and/or Endoscopy experience.

A minimum of 2 years of related leadership experience

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:     Ability to work in a hospital environment and deal closely and effectively with a variety of staff (physicians and nurses, infection control practitioners, CSPD & HLD staff, risk management, administration, medical assistants, various hospital personnel) up to 100% of work time.  Requires interpersonal skills necessary to lead, coach and educate others and to work effectively with a wide variety of hospital and outside personnel. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office.
