The role:
Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer, the Graduate Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for working as part of a design team in producing the Engineering deliverables for successful delivery of a project.
The principle role is:
- Producing technical solutions to complex engineering problems (may involve project or sales work), this can include concept design, detailed design, calculations, analysis and technical reports / documentation.
- Take ownership of the tasks assigned through to successful delivery within the specified time, budget to the specification and required quality standards.
- Take direction from Lead / Senior Engineer where required.
- Ensure that design practices / guidelines / Royal IHC Ltd processes are followed.
The role involves a rotation plan, which will see the graduate complete secondments in relevant departments throughout the business, including engineering disciplines, project management, sales, production and commissioning.
This role may involve national and international travel.
You will be responsible for:
Executing design tasks in accordance with direction and guidance from Design Engineers, Lead and Senior Engineers, this can include but not limited to concept and detailed design tasks, supporting calculations, models, drawings, writing specifications and developing BOMs as require.
Working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary project team you will:
- Interpret mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and control requirements to ensure that the design performs as per the client / project requirements.
- Contribute to writing of project technical documentation such as Functional Design Specification and technical specifications.
- With support from Senior / Lead Engineer ensure that an appropriate amount of analysis has been performed on the sub-system / project.
- Ensure that work pack BOM in Teamcentre structure manager is set up in accordance with best practice and is kept up to date.
- Work with the draughting team to translate the design solution into final design drawings / assembly drawings, this may involve draughting as part of the role.
- When developing the technical solution ensure that due consideration is given to construction, commissioning, test and operation & maintenance of the equipment.
- As required, contribute to the commissioning and test specifications for sub-systems and projects.
- Follow the life cycle of the project from concept design to commissioning and completion.

- Works closely with other Engineers and the rest of the team to achieve design aims.
- Ability to plan own work and report progress.
- Ability to use past experience and technical knowledge to achieve solutions to complex engineering problems to agreed timescales.
- Ability to work effectively with others in a cross functional environment.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Engineering Design and Development experience.
- Educated to an Engineering Degree level ( B Eng or M Eng).
- Working towards full membership of a recognised Engineering body (eg IMechE) or working towards this.
