JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, independently manages execution and timely completion of hazard-based safety evaluations from determining project scope to documentation and testing. This includes determining project specifications, analyzing failure mitigation strategies, assessing the safety of software and hardware systems, analyzing electrical schematics and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) documents, establishing test programs for product investigations, analyzing test programs for adequacy and sequence, examining samples for compliance with UL requirements, and preparing reports for clients. Assists in the development of UL requirements, test methods, and test equipment. May exercise Project Handler Signature Authority as Project Handler of record responsible for opening, maintenance, completion, and closing of assigned new work engineering projects. May exercise Review Signature Authority as assigned as Reviewer of record responsible for initial review, status review, and final technical review of all new work engineering projects.

  • Lead the development, or review, or audit/assessment of safety work products for clients seeking compliance to standards in functional safety and related fields, including UL991, UL1998, UL/IEC60730-1 Annex H, IEC/UL 60335-1 Annex R, ISO13849-1&2, IEC61508 and other similar standards relevant to systems- and software- engineering.
  • Contribute to the development, or review, or audit/assessment of processes and related safety management processes for clients seeking compliance to standards in functional safety and other similar standards relevant to systems- and software- engineering.
  • Contribute to the development, or review, or audit/assessment of safety processes and related safety management processes for clients seeking to compliance to standards in functional safety and related fields, and other similar standards relevant to systems- and software- engineering.
  • Employ established methods and frameworks, relevant to functional safety and related fields, to assist in the engineering development or review, or audit/assessment of safety cases for complex software-intensive systems. Methods and frameworks may include safety analysis such as FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, safety requirements management, safety concepts such as FSC/TSC work products, system and software architectures, HIL and SIL test, system integration test, and system/ validation.
  • Assist in training by providing small portions of training events on topics relevant to functional safety and related fields.
  • Contribute to client programs by interacting regularly with clients in technical program meetings and project reviews. Address client concerns and to resolve client issues. Provide technical assistance to clients in reference to functional safety and related technical fields. Projects may include regular travel to client sites and to other UL locations.
  • Perform verification reviews or other technical review activities as directed. May represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
  • Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports. Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment.
  • Coordinates laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and engineering support staff and establishing completion dates. Coordinates administrative aspects of project management. Serves as Project Handler of record and may sign as Reviewer of record as assigned.
  • Communicates project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports. Prepares Follow-Up Service Procedures and information pages.
  • Integrate continuous improvement and safety culture in all aspects of the job.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • University Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering or a closely related field in a relevant technical field plus 2-3 years of experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
  • Familiar with the concept of relevant functional safety standard(s), UL991 & UL1998, UL/IEC60730-1 Annex H, IEC/UL 60335-1 Annex R or ISO13849-1/2, IEC61508. Knowledge of IEC 62443 is a plus.
  • Good communication skills in English
  • Ability to work in an international, fast-paced environment and willingness to travel.
