Job Description 

We are looking for a UI/UX Designer with experience using Retool and writing JavaScript snippets. You will play a key role in understanding user needs, designing and building internal tools and applications that improve efficiency and enhance user experience. Your work will directly impact our operations by creating seamless, intuitive, and high-performance interfaces.  You will be part of an internal platform team of software engineers and product managers, and you will regularly connect with the scientists using the platform.  This job is onsite in Cambridge, MA and will require international travel to meet with remote users about once a quarter. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  1. Design, build, and support internal tools and dashboards using Retool. 
  2. Gather feedback from users and iterate on UI/UX improvements. 
  3. Work closely with product managers and software engineers to build efficient and user-friendly internal applications. 
  4. Design custom Retool components to meet specific needs and pair with software engineers to implement them. 
  5. Ensure a high level of usability, accessibility, and responsiveness in all UI components. 
  6. Participate in the entire software development life cycle, focusing on designing, implementing, and maintaining front-end tools. 
  7. Document and help support best practices to foster a collaborative development culture. 
  8. Write clear, concise documentation for both engineers and end users. 

Required Qualifications: 

  1. 2+ years of experience in front-end development, UX, or Design with JavaScript, React, or similar frameworks. 
  2. Experience working with Retool or similar tools and frameworks. 
  3. Strong UX and design intuition, with an ability to create intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces. 
  4. Solid understanding of HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript (ES6+). 
  5. Experience working with RESTful APIs and integrating third-party services. 
  6. Understanding of git best practices. 
  7. Acute listening skills and patience to deeply understand user challenges. 
  8. Excellent problem-solving skills and team-first mentality.  
  9. Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and stakeholders. 
  10. Energetic self-starter and independent thinker, with strong attention to detail. 
  11. Eager to work with highly skilled and dynamic teams in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and technical setting. 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  1. Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, or Python. 
  2. Experience with SQL and database design for optimizing queries.
  3. Background in data visualization and dashboard design.
  4. Previous experience in a fast-paced startup or SaaS environment.
