The Role
As a Firmware Engineer III at Beacon Biosignals, you will develop and test embedded software for EEG devices to ensure quality and compliance with regulatory standards. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, performing firmware design, and ensuring high-quality software releases through automated testing and debugging.
Summary Generated by Built In

Beacon Biosignals is on a mission to revolutionize precision medicine for the brain. We are the leading at-home EEG platform supporting clinical development of novel therapeutics for neurological, psychiatric, and sleep disorders. Our FDA 510(k)-cleared Dreem EEG headband and AI algorithms enable quantitative biomarker discovery and implementation. Beacon’s Clinico-EEG database contains EEG data from nearly 100,000 patients, and our cloud-native analytics platform powers large-scale RWD/RWE retrospective and predictive studies. Beacon Biosignals is changing the way that patients are treated for any disorder that affects brain physiology.

In this exciting and challenging role as the firmware engineer or embedded software engineer, you will contribute to the development of new/modified EEG device software systems that meet application, business, customer and regulatory requirements. You will be working in the Device team, reporting to the VP of Device Systems and working closely with hardware, firmware and software engineers. You are responsible for design, development, testing, and documentation of device software.

Your goal as a firmware engineer is to strive without reserve for the greatest quality and reliability in our devices. To accomplish this goal, you will collaborate with other Design, Research, Manufacturing and Quality colleagues to develop software and troubleshoot design issues. Your design iterations get incorporated during development to improve the product’s quality and reliability, so the user gets the best possible experience. At the end of the design cycle, you will be performing testing to verify that the product meets its intended design requirements. Additionally, you will document design in accordance with applicable product development processes, Quality and Regulatory requirements.

This position is primarily remote, but we are looking for candidates in the Boston area and surrounding states because we may require some in office time (likely around one day a week) for team meetings, collaboration and hardware support.

What success looks like:

  • Develop and maintain firmware and software in accordance with Beacon’s QMS
  • Perform firmware design with significant challenges related to complexity, power, size and RF communication
  • Execute on all phases of firmware development including requirements capture, prototyping, design, unit test, static analysis, code review, design verification, debugging and manufacturing readiness
  • Develop automated tests to ensure high-quality software releases and accurate functionality
  • Develop production software tools for mass production

What you will bring:

  • Education: BS in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field
  • Work Experience (post-graduate): 5+ years work experience with BS degree or 3+ years work experience with MS degree, developing real-time embedded firmware in C
  • Ability to read and follow electrical schematics
  • Knowledge of embedded systems architecture and real-time operating systems (RTOS)
  • Proficiency with tools like Git/JIRA/Confluence and platforms like GitHub
  • Proficiency with scripting languages such as Python
  • Knowledge of design controls and regulations for medical device development is preferred.

The base salary range for this is determined based on past experience, specific skills and qualifications. The base salary is one component of the total compensation package, which includes equity, PTO and other benefits.

What We Do

Brain monitoring is not easily accessible, interpretable or actionable. We're going to fix this, and we'd like you to help. With improved access to brain data and the right tools to act on it, clinicians could intervene in real-time, match life-altering therapies to the patients they benefit most, and treat previously untreatable neurological and psychiatric diseases. Beacon is building an interdisciplinary and uniquely talented team to implement this future.

Why Work With Us

We value curiosity and innovation. We approach problems like research - problems are an opportunity to learn something new and improve upon an outcome.
