The Environmental Scientist provides support to the Environmental Practice working in a team orientated organization with other environmental professionals. This position will assist in field efforts involving: ecological and environmental assessments, wetland delineations, wildlife assessments, construction compliance, permitting support, among others. Office activities will include scholarship on subjects that advance value and effectiveness of efforts for clients, primary data assessments and analyses, document preparation for inclusion in reports and communications. The successful candidate will be required to travel overnight at a minimum of 4 days per week.

In addition, your role will be to:

  • Document field conditions via site assessments, ecological evaluations, habitat assessments, sampling, data collection and initial data analyses.
  • Conduct field preparation through the review, documentation, and interpretation, of data libraries, imagery libraries, and other resources.
  • Work on multiple efforts through specific task assignments.
  • Participate in project reviews, and task meetings, and weekly organizational meeting calls.
  • Develop broad knowledge and skills in a specific practice area. A process of continual professional improvement through one’s own efforts while in synergy with training provided internally and externally.
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for projects, e.g., soil sampling, water sampling, and other.
  • Work within cooperative teams to deliver on larger or more complex issues.
  • Review and evaluate existing data, collects field data, performs scholarship of scientific literature, and consults with professionals in various fields to identify and/or evaluate environmental issues, problems, and new or revised regulations.
  • Assists with preparation and research of required information

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • The associate is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and reach with hands and arms.
  • The associate is frequently required to work outdoors for prolonged periods of time under a variety of weather conditions (up to 10 hours).
  • Specific physical abilities required include walking on un-level grounds in varied topographies and sometimes challenging environments such as wetlands, lakes, rivers, forests, and desserts.
  • The employee must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 8 hours).
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop.
  • The associate must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications:

  • Requires an accredited bachelors or master’s degree in environmental science, ecology, environmental planning, or related field required. Science and planning degrees will be preferred.
  • Minimum one year professional work experience
  • Capabilities with GIS preferred
  • Requires functional knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) required for use in completing assignments
  • Foundation capabilities with ESRI Suite of projects for map production and data organization
  • Good communication skills: speaking and writing, with in-house team, clients, and agencies
  • Organizational membership or a professional certification track, as required. 
  • Member of a professional practice organization(s) is desired
