Bonfire Studios is seeking an exceptional Senior/Principal Environment Artist to help craft the immersive world of Arkheron, our latest original IP. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled world builder with a proven track record of creating AAA-quality environment art assets, including architectural kits, materials, vistas, props, and set dressing.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a creative and collaborative artist who has a developer / product first mindset, and deep experience in concept and level design to make a significant impact on our gameplay experience.
Bonfire Studios is a highly collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment where every developer’s voice shapes the company, the game, and our day-to-day work. As an Environment Artist on a small, focused team, you will have the opportunity to help define our new IP and create amazing experiences for our players.
About the role…
- You will use your skills in modeling and sculpting, texturing, UV Layout, and material creation to develop high quality 3D environment assets that will help build out our worlds.
- Our expectations are that you are capable of being self-sufficient and taking initiative when needed. While you’ll have the support of a highly collaborative team, we operate as a small, focused group where success often means pushing ideas forward independently and adapting to evolving needs. If you do your best work in large teams with highly specialized roles, this may not be the best fit.
- You will be responsible for creating fully flushed out architectural kits from existing concept/block out to completion.
- You will ensure that environment art assets are of the highest artistic quality and uphold the integrity of the game’s visual aesthetic and work in service of the game’s design.
- You will collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams focused on world building and visual storytelling. You will have the opportunity to conduct research for reference materials and push the overall quality.
- Your ideas and input are welcomed and valued; our team members inspire each other.
- You will collaborate with other disciplines to make sure artwork delivers visual fidelity and gameplay needs.
- You'll wear many hats, have ample opportunity to utilize your prior experience creating worlds, and also be supported in experimenting with new areas of interest to you.
- Contribute beyond your core responsibilities, helping shape the game, studio culture, and creative process.
We’re excited about you because you…
- Believe, as we do, that great games are the product of great teams that put their people first.
- Are self-driven and can operate effectively even if there is ambiguity—you can take an idea from a whiteboard sketch to a finished in-game asset without needing every detail spelled out.
- Ideally have 5+ years of experience as a 3D Environment Artist, with at least one shipped AAA game.
- You have an eye for architecture, material definition, color theory, 2D & 3D design.
- Have proficiency in Maya (or any 3D modeling package), Photoshop, ZBrush and Texture creation/Material editing (Substance Painter/Unreal/Unity).
- Have familiarity with video game development including, but not limited to workflow, tools, lighting, high and low poly modeling, texture painting, PBR material setup, mapping techniques, UV layout, and engine parameters/optimizations.
- Want to have a large impact while collaborating with other talented developers in a tight knit AAA studio, rolling up your sleeves and using your passions and interests to shape your role at the company.
- Thrive on collaboration and communicate well with developers of all disciplines.
- Are open, humble, eager, and excited about learning and contributing in multiple areas of the studio. Your curiosity propels you to jump in and dive deep on new problems.
- Value building trust with the people you work with.
- Value working with a diverse team and welcome different perspectives.
- Have a growth mindset and also care about helping others develop.
- Are as passionate about the creative process and developing games as we are!
You’ll love working at Bonfire because we…
- Are proud of the game we’re building! We’re excited to playtest it daily as a team and can’t wait to share it with the world.
- Are dedicated to excellence and love pushing the limits of what we can create together.
- Care about building an environment for people to have meaningful impact and ownership of their work.
- Prioritize building strong, authentic relationships and regularly bring people together through meaningful gatherings.
- Offer opportunities to learn and contribute beyond your focused discipline in areas of interest or passion.
The base salary for this position as a Senior is $196,500 annually. If your experience is more (principal level) or less (mid-level), your salary will be more/less than that rate (based on market data). We consider candidates' potential impact holistically, not just their years of experience or skill level. There is also more to our total comp package than salary, we offer equity to every new hire as well as a comprehensive benefits package and more.
