Job Description
This Enterprise Cloud Engineer role sits on our Engineering Practices team and plays an instrumental role in transforming and modernizing how Wellmark engineers develop software. You will share knowledge on best practices and drive technological advancements. You will focus on the support of designing and optimizing cloud-native solutions, IaC, CI/CD, DevOps Practices, and Microservices Architecture are all a part of the ecosystem you will be working to modernize and influence. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining our internal developer portal. You will serve as a technical resource for engineering staff and tasked with coaching and mentoring engineers.
Qualifications
Preferred:
- Strong knowledge of cloud platforms – AWS, Azure.
- Strong experience with Backstage or similar developer portal frameworks.
- Expertise in Git, JavaScript, Python and unit testing frameworks such as Jest and PyTest.
- Proven track record of mentoring and coaching software engineers.
- Experience with Test Driven Development.
- Proficiency in Agile methodologies.
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree or direct and applicable work experience
- Minimum 4 years’ progressive experience in cloud and/or system administration; including advanced scripting and coding experience with specific experience with collaborating with Engineers, Security and Application Design/Run teams to ensure system design aligns to the architecture standards. Working knowledge of DevOps / CICD methodologies and tools
- Demonstrated experience with scripting / automation tools and concepts
- Proven experience with a variety of virtualization technologies in multi-tenant, private and hybrid cloud environments. Hands on experience creating reusable solutions (patterns), including familiarity with implementing ‘design for failure’ approaches
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across all technical teams in the process of defining IT Solution scope, business/system requirements, and writing/executing test cases
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) with the ability to influence and drive change as well as adapt communication to your audience, with experience creating presentations and presenting to senior technical leaders
- Advanced problem solving / trouble shooting experience to identify root cause for multi-platform issues and provide innovative solutions
- Understand risk and how enterprise level changes impact an organization. Mentor and coach others within team on impact of changes
- Take action to assist in design and implementation of new processes, solutions and measurement of impact
- Proactive in nature and someone that is naturally curious, inquisitive and willing to learn new skills
- Travel less than 5%.
Additional Information
a. Serve as an escalation point for an Engineer I or II regarding troubleshooting and issue resolution for applications or systems. Responsible for troubleshooting and issue resolution for platforms and will work with Cloud Engineers, Developers, Security, Architects and other appropriate stakeholders as part of issue resolution.
b. Enhance and design new and existing processes and patterns. Assist in build and install of services and platforms as needed to support overall stability. Review, drive and implement best practices around scripting.
c. Coordinate and lead planning and execution of new services and platform implementation/deployments. Coordinate installations, customization and maintenance of new services and platforms and interfaces with vendors as needed.
d. Assist in design of recommended technical enhancements for existing services and processes. Leads process optimization and improvements; including advanced automation scripts to support and maintain a resilient and scalable cloud environment. Be available to assist with on call escalation as needed.
e. Ensure systems availability and performance. Inform leadership and/or Engineering peers of systems health and create incidents for remediation.
f. Engage with stakeholders to understand their business needs in order to design and implement a appropriate solutions (e.g. process, technical).
g. Act as escalation point for off-shore administration teams regarding technical design and cloud solution implementation; including review and quality assurance. Work with Engineer peers and Procurement to coordinate any vendor issues or escalations; including contract reviews as necessary.
h. In partnership with Vendor Management, Procurement and Internal Audit, collaborate to resolve issues related to Third Party Risk analysis and contractual obligations.
i. Draft and publish team documentation (e.g. process, run-books, diagrams etc.), and coordinate with other Engineer peers to maintain and ensure all is kept up to date and accurate.
j. Maintain compliance with all applicable legal, regulatory, licensing, governance, and contractual requirements by helping to establish and monitor effective processes and procedures. Stay up to date with technology policies and procedures; including updates for non-enterprise level systems, team processes and diagrams.
k. Other duties as assigned.

Your presence in-office is critical to effectively perform the responsibilities of the role.
