Role

SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years. A major part of this is delivery of the Western Link2 (WL2) High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) project in Joint Venture with National Grid.

You will manage and lead a team of professional Transmission design engineers and support staff responsible for developing, assessing and providing complex detailed engineering designs required to deliver the Western Link 2 HVDC project. Through your engineering leadership you will balance innovation and value engineering to reduce overall asset lifecycle costs on project. A key influencer in investment planning decisions as part of the development & delivery of the Transmission capital project program.

The role reports to the Project Director from a SPEN line management perspective. 

What you'll be doing

As a member of the WL2 senior management team, be able to work collaboratively in a matrix organisation across National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) and SP Transmission (SPT) to ensure that a high quality, technically compliant and innovative product is delivered, satisfying both NGET, SPT and the WL2 Project Board

Lead a joint NGET and SPT Engineering multidisciplinary team to assess the design of a 2GW Converter Stations and the associated connections.

Lead a joint NGET and SPT Engineering multidisciplinary team to assess the design a 2GW cable circuits between Converter Stations, for which the route will be located onshore and offshore.

Responsible for ensuring compliance with SPT and NGET policies and to ensure the development, where required, of any additional engineering policies, processes and procedures for design and delivery of WL2 HVDC.

Responsible for monitoring the application of technical standards and quality of engineering across the multi-disciplinary areas from project design process through to construction completion and final record submission.

Encourage improvement in engineering design for cables and converters through active involvement in the proactive assessment of engineering solutions.

Responsible for the co-ordination and implementation of engineering lessons learnt and improvement initiatives for future HVDC links.

Take the lead across the SPT Projects engineering disciplines for coordination of the production of the System Construction Authorisation (SCA) ensuring key dates are achieved.

Balance and optimise the best use of engineering resources from both NGET and SPT to deliver Engineering Design works according to the project plan, and to integrate and manage external specialist resources across all project functions as required

Responsible for managing the production of technical tender documents, assessment of technical submissions, supporting the commercial assessment of the contract and any contract variations.

Responsible for the site records handover to the SPT-NGET Joint Venture, to ensure NGET and SPT Operational functions have all relevant information required to operate the link at takeover.

Ensure all plant and equipment is Type Registered and/or Approved for the use on NGET and/or SPT's Transmission Systems.

Build and lead a team of approximately 6 professional engineers for WL2 while supporting and influencing other parts of SPEN throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibility for multi-billion-pound project designs, ensuring full compliance with Safety requirements (e.g. CDM)

What you will bring

Degree in an Engineering discipline with relevant experience

Chartered Engineer Status (or working towards)

Experience in designing HVDC electrical infrastructure projects.

Good inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses.

Ability to implement, apply and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice in a design environment.

Having the ability to investigate and understand technical characteristics of substation and cable systems equipment both HVDC and HVAC.

An understanding in terms of the plant and equipment deployed for transmission networks and how it is operated / maintained.

Experience in the implementation of new technologies and engineering solutions to achieve reductions in project lifetime costs
