Job Description

Who is VTS?
Vector is collaborating with AWS and other leading global technology firms, right here in New Zealand, to work on projects that are addressing some of the world's biggest energy challenges.

In 2020, an alliance was formed between Vector and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to co-develop a cloud-native data platform: Diverge. This team has since evolved into Vector Technology Services (VTS)—a subsidiary of Vector, New Zealand's largest distributor of electricity and gas.

Through our strategy of delivering commercially valuable, cloud-native platforms that solve real problems today—while remaining primed for rapid evolution in the future—we work to deliver on our vision of creating a new energy future. We focus on the following pillars:

  • Decarbonisation, Decentralisation, Democratisation and Digitalisation

About the Opportunity
As our Engineering Manager at VTS, you will play a crucial leadership role—driving technical execution and engineering excellence as we scale our platform for global growth. You’ll empower a high-performing software engineering team, foster a collaborative and innovative environment, and ensure our technical vision aligns with business and customer objectives.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and develop a talented engineering team, overseeing recruitment, mentorship, and professional growth

  • Drive technical execution, ensuring seamless development, testing, deployment, and support of the Diverge platform

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Delivery, Business Development, and Customer Success teams to align technology with market needs and business goals

  • Shape the future of our engineering function, balancing hands-on leadership with strategic focus on scalability and innovation

Who We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a genuine and skilled engineering leader who thrives in a people-first culture and is passionate about building high-performing engineering teams. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven engineering leadership experience—you’ll be known for empowering leaders and enabling team delivery

  • A strong technical background in Java or .NET, with a solid understanding of AWS serverless technologies, SaaS development, and cloud-native architectures

  • Deep knowledge of the software development lifecycle and practical experience applying DevOps and Agile practices effectively

  • An open and curious mindset, with the ability to balance innovation with delivering commercial outcomes

  • Excellent communication, influencing, and negotiation skills, with a knack for bringing stakeholders together

  • A pragmatic and methodical approach to problem-solving—able to make critical decisions under pressure and coordinate teams to deliver the best outcomes

  • Experience in security best practices, with the ability to implement and maintain appropriate security processes (a plus)

Why Join VTS?

  • Career Growth – Work closely with our Head of Engineering and an opportunity to grow your career with formal and informal development opportunities
  • Market-Leading & Family-Friendly Benefits – Enjoy perks that recognize the importance of family

  • Engineer-Led Culture – We embrace eXtreme Programming (XP) techniques such as Test-Driven Development (TDD) and pair programming

  • Meaningful Work – Tackle complex, real-world challenges that drive innovation

  • Stable Teams – Join product-focused teams committed to long-term success

  • Flexibility – Enjoy hybrid work options, with the ability to work from home a couple of days a week, plus flexible start and finish times

  • Wellbeing Support – Access health and wellbeing initiatives designed to support you

The Diverge Platform:

  • A customizable, managed Software-as-a-Service platform for energy data ingestion, processing, insight generation, and data delivery

  • Cloud-native and composed entirely of AWS serverless services—bringing scalability, reliability, and resilience to this mission-critical enterprise system

  • Deployed and managed through infrastructure-as-code, with automated software releases and service orchestration

  • Capable of real-time streaming data processing in stateful, temporal sequence- and data-dependency-aware pipelines

What We Do

We are New Zealand's largest distributor of electricity and gas, owning and operating networks which span the Auckland region. But we don’t stop here - our reach extends to Australia and the Pacific Islands, shaping a new energy future for our customers, through innovative digital and engineering solutions, metering services, solar energy solutions, electric vehicle (EV) networks, high speed internet fibre, air and water purification to name a few.

We haven’t been afraid to challenge the status quo. As leaders of the transformation of the energy sector, we know the ‘same old’ just won’t cut it. We have the confidence to forge new solutions and for our people to work differently, to think differently. We have collaborated with global technology companies and thought leaders who share our view that innovation and digitalisation are key to meeting the future needs of energy systems and fast-evolving customer demands. As governments, businesses and consumers urgently take action to decarbonise, at Vector we are clear on our vision – creating a new energy future.

Because we live in a world that is changing fast, we must continue to identify and develop better options that will provide value, choice and service for our customers throughout New Zealand and beyond, so the environment and communities we love continue to thrive. To do this, Vector has a vision of creating a new energy future, which will help to deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy solutions for customers.
