About the role

Chime is seeking an Engineering Manager with a strong technical background to lead and scale our Security Engineering function. This is not just a people management role — we need someone who deeply understands security engineering challenges, can architect security solutions, and is capable of guiding engineers technically while driving strategic security initiatives.

The Security Engineering team at Chime builds core security services, frameworks, and platforms that enable security by design across all of engineering. Additionally, this team partners with Trust & Safety, Risk, and Product teams to build security-related member features such as the Security Center, Passkeys, and other security-driven innovations for our member-facing applications. 

This team has driven game-changing security innovations at Chime, including:

  • Monocle – A proactive security tool that integrates security seamlessly into engineering workflows. (Read more)
  • Access Service – A self-service system for granting and revoking privileged access, eliminating 99% of persistent access risks. (Conference Talk)
  • Service-to-Service Authentication & Authorization Platform – A platform solution that enables secure inter-service communication. (Conference talk)
  • Overwatch – A security scan orchestration platform, aiming to quickly and scalably discover vulnerabilities in our code before they make it to production. (Conference Talk)  

The base salary offered for this role and level of experience will begin at $176,490 and up to $245,100. Full-time employees are also eligible for a bonus, competitive equity package, and benefits. The actual base salary offered may be higher, depending on your location, skills, qualifications, and experience.


In this role, you can expect to 

  • Lead and Scale Security Engineering – Hire, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of security and software engineers.
  • Define and Execute Security Engineering Strategy – Set clear objectives and key results for the security engineering team. Build and maintain secure frameworks, libraries, and security services that integrate seamlessly into Chime’s engineering ecosystem.
  • Provide Hands-on Technical Leadership – Guide engineers in designing scalable security solutions, enforcing best practices, and ensuring efficient implementation.
  • Partner with IT, Engineering and Product Teams – Work closely with teams across Chime to embed security in product development while balancing security and business priorities.
  • Drive the Security Engineering Roadmap – Collaborate with Security Leadership to define and track long-term security initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Foster a Security-First Culture – Promote learning, continuous improvement, and a proactive security mindset across the company.


To thrive in this role, you have

  • Strong Engineering Background – Experience as a security, software, or infrastructure engineer before moving into leadership. Ability to dive deep into technical discussions and guide engineers on security implementation. Hands-on experience with Go, Python, or Ruby is a plus.
  • Technical expertise across security principles, network security, cloud security, identity and access management, encryption. 
  • 2+ Years Proven Ability Leading a High-Functioning Technical Team – Experience managing security or engineering functions, driving execution, collaborating across functions and fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Security Engineering Expertise – Hands-on experience building security tooling, automation, authentication frameworks, encryption services, or secure infrastructure. 
  • Influence at Scale – Ability to shape security strategy by collaborating with security leadership and influencing broader security programs across the organization.
  • Developer & Customer Focus – Passion for making security seamless for developers, ensuring security enhances rather than hinders innovation. Strong communication and leadership skills to align teams on security priorities.
  • Ensure compliance with industry security standards and regulatory requirements (e.g. SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI-DSS, etc)
  • Experience working in fast-paced, high-growth environments.
  • Certifications (preferred): CISSP, CISM, or other relevant security certifications.
