An overview of this role
As the Engineering Manager for the Developer Experience team, you will lead one to two cross-functional teams of Backend Engineers and Software Engineers in Test, driving improvements to the efficiency, reliability, and overall experience of our internal development workflows. The Developer Experience (DevEx) team is focused on transforming GitLab’s internal development workflows by equipping engineers with the right tools, tests, and interfaces to build and ship high-quality changes efficiently. As we enter a pivotal phase in our evolution, you will play a critical role in shaping our strategy and execution—driving improvements to development tools and processes, and helping to establish a strong DevEx Platform culture. With strong organizational buy-in, your leadership will be key in defining and delivering impactful roadmaps that enable meaningful, lasting change.
DevEx partners closely with GitLab’s Deployment, Release, and development teams across the organization to design and implement effective, scalable DevOps workflows.
Some examples of our projects:
- Transforming our test suites and approach to empower development teams to fully own the tests for their features
- Standardizing GitLab APIs and creating guidelines and training to provide a foundational API platform that makes it easier for feature teams to build new capabilities
- Enhancing developer environments to improve development workflow and simplify local testing
What You’ll Do
In this role, you'll balance technical leadership with people management, to help DevEx
- Hire and grow an incredible team that lives our values
- Define, communicate, and execute a technical roadmap for DevEx improvements
- Train and support developers to create and maintain effective tests for their products
- Build tools and processes enabling developers to test changes effectively and early
- Streamline merge processes and integration tests to provide rapid feedback to developers
- Identify bottlenecks and gaps, then prioritize effective solutions to ensure all changes meet customer expectations
What You’ll Bring
- Deep understanding and passion for designing and delivering effective testing and DevEx solutions across multiple development teams
- Strong people manager skills - we’re looking for managers who can hire and support individuals while forming cohesive teams capable of delivering on company goals
- Experience leading teams through transformation, with the ability to identify high-impact changes and gain buy-in from your team and stakeholders
- Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills to build and maintain relationships throughout the company
