Engineer – IT Operations DBA

Avantor is looking for an Engineer for IT Operations DBA team. Database Engineer should be responsible for configuring, monitoring, and optimizing Avantor’s database environment with the focus on AWS RDS (Amazon Relational Data Base Services), MySQL and Oracle databases. They will work closely with the engineering, development and QA teams to support multi-billion-dollar customer facing applications. Our top priority is preventing service disruption while enabling the fast growth of our life sciences company. They will also have the opportunity to cross train on various DBMS (Database Management System) platforms as well as mentor non- MySQL, Oracle DBAs in routine support activities. Key success factors will include a positive attitude and the ability to work independently as well as within teams. As a member of the IT Operations group, they will be reporting to the Manager of Data Management in the Hosting Services team.

What we’re looking for 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science preferred or equivalent work experience - required.

Experience: 5-7 years of work experience with an RDMS - required.

Preferred Qualification:

• AWS/Azure Database certification - required.

• Strong understanding of relational database structure and design

• Strong knowledge/experience in Linux/Unix OS, including shell scripting - required.

• Solid work practices regarding change and risk management, troubleshooting methodology - required.

• Good communication and technical documentation skills – required

• Experience in Oracle & Postgres database support – highly desirable

• Knowledge in Oracle Database licensing - desirable

• Experience running enterprise deployment projects – is a plus.

• Industry experience in pharma, life sciences, warehouse and/or manufacturing - is a plus

• Knowledge of RDMS (Relational Database Management Systems): MySQL - required

• Knowledge of Linux/Unix Operating Systems - required; technical interview will be conducted

• Knowledge of LiteSpeed - highly desirable

• Knowledge of PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server - desired.

• Broad knowledge of information technologies – desired.

• Skilled in PowerShell scripting - required

• Excellent troubleshooting skills - required.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills - required

• Reliable internet - required.

• Ability to be an on-call escalation point for production support and scheduled off-hours/weekend work if/when needed - required.

• Ability to cross train non-MySQL DBAs as well as learn other RDMS - highly desirable.

• Ability to work independently as well as a team environment with a positive attitude - required.

• Accustomed to work within the ITIL/ITSM framework of Incident, Problem, Change, and release management - desired.

• Self-motivated and flexibility - required.

• Commitment to high professional and ethical standards in a diverse workplace - required.

• Desire to focus on and please the customer, ability to understand requests from the customer’s point of view - highly desired.

How you will thrive and create an impact:

• Provide production support of Avantor databases (MySQL, Oracle), including several in our critical eCommerce environment.

• Oversee all aspects of the Avantor’s numerous MySQL databases: installation, security, tuning, maintenance, monitoring, upgrades, redundancy, backups, troubleshooting and developer guidance.

• Support for major project implementations including database upgrades, migrations to AWS or other on-prem data centers, enhancements, and break-fix.

• Assists Operations and Support staff in trouble-shooting application issues.

• Provide support for Avantor other databases (Postgres) to critical applications.

• Participate on-call rotation for the DBA team

• Daily Oracle and MySQL database maintenance and configuration, optimization of data base structures and performance.

• Maintain regular backups, restorations and other maintenance requirements.

• Participate on the designing, implementation and automatization of systems to improve our internal processes

• Establishes and enforces standards and processes for the administration of MySQL servers.

• Creates reports to show the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) related to the MySQL server’s performance.

• Other duties as assigned.
