About the team and role

We are looking for a driven and adaptable Employment Counsel to join our legal team. You will work closely with our Chief Legal and People Officer and Chief Executive Officer to provide employment-related advice across the employee life cycle. As part of a nimble legal team, you will also be a generalist, understanding the business and providing broad legal support across the organization. You thrive on solving complex problems, collaborating across functions, and delivering high-quality outcomes. This is a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a fast-paced and growing company where you can have an immediate and lasting impact.

We’re excited about you because…

  • You have 4+ years experience as an employment attorney at a tech-focused law firm or in-house at a private company. Experience with advising on employment-related matters for an early-stage company required. Experience with commercial contracts, equity, data privacy, and/or higher education strongly preferred.
  • You are thoughtful, proactive, detail-oriented, and an excellent communicator - able to take complicated legal concepts and distill them into actionable outcomes.
  • You have a high intellectual ceiling, low ego, and impeccable judgment.
  • You’re excited not just to cross things off your list but also to build processes to help scale the team to be more organized, efficient, and streamlined.
  • You build strong relationships and operate from a place of high trust, openness, and adaptability.
  • You’re mission-driven and motivated by the idea of growing and contributing your skills across the business as a generalist and learning more about the intersection of higher education and tech.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will…

  • Advise on a variety of employment-related matters across the organization, including offer letters, performance management, and separation agreements.
  • Advise on matters related to legal and people policies, strategy, and risk management.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and help establish and manage an efficient contracting function.
  • Lead key legal projects across a variety of areas and business functions from initiation to completion.
  • Assist in the creation, review, and operationalizing of various policies and work streams.
  • Translate a range of federal and state mandates and regulations into actionable outcomes, working with teams across the business.

Location: New York or San Francisco Bay Area

What you’ll get:

A compensation package that includes a base salary ($140K - $180K) + equity grant

    • Actual compensation within the pay range will be decided based on factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior relevant experience, and specific work location. For roles that are available to be filled remotely, base salary is localized according to employee work location.
  • Medical Insurance + free Dental and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) match
  • “Take what you need” PTO + several paid holidays
  • In-office lunches for our NY Office (did we mention, we’re dog friendly? 🐶)
  • Flexible working hours & a hybrid work schedule in NY (Mon & Fri remote; Tues-Thurs in-office)
  • Social events - happy hours, birthday celebrations, holiday parties, & more
  • Opportunity to make an impact – you’ll be an integral player in bringing our vision to life

Why Work With Us

We’re inspired by the efforts of those seeking to increase completion rates for community college students. We find the CUNY ASAP program and its efforts to address how systemic barriers and unique personal responsibilities may hinder many students completing their degree especially compelling.
