Shell LNG Marketing & Trading is the Global LNG Trading organization. The LNG market is developing rapidly with Downstream LNG as one of the growths pillars in the Shell LNG portfolio – LNG will be break bulked from re-export terminals and supplied to end customers, using the LNG as fuel for vessels, trucks & industrial purposes.

The Downstream LNG Operations team is responsible for the timely implementation, execution and optimization of physical LNG purchase & sales deals negotiated by their commercial colleagues, including scheduling, inventory management; fleet management; customer contract management; pricing & exposure awareness; finance & back-office management.

What’s the role?

The Trading Operator is part of the global Downstream LNG operations team reporting in the operations line of Shell Trading. It has a high level of commercial awareness of LNG trading, Terminal operations and knowledge of the ship chartering and bunkering business. Internally, the operator takes charge of end-to-end deal implementation and execution, acting as a central point connecting various internal stakeholders to ensure safe and compliant transactions with maximum commercial value.

This role demands resilience under pressure, adept handling of a high workload, and the ability to prioritize tasks with conflicting deadlines. The trading operator maintains the highest standards of accuracy within complex accounting and administrative systems. Their responsibilities encompass day-to-day operational duties while actively supporting business growth.

Although the operators are regionally based, collaborative work with fellow team members in Madrid, The Hague, Houston, and Singapore is essential.

More specific responsibilities include:

  • Manage day-to-day physical trading operations for the assigned commodity portfolio.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate execution of contract obligations while complying with all requirements
  • Identify commercial and logistical optionality to create value
  • Accurately and timely update trading IT systems with shipping data, inventory reconciliations, contract and accounting data
  • Maintain comprehensive records in line with legal and fiscal obligations
  • Manage back office requirements which includes handling accounting, accruals, and efficient invoice processing for freight & storage costs, LNG product, taxes & any other charges
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and HSSE requirements, as well as managing financial securities and credit
  • Assist traders and business developers with operational input for contracts and new business proposals
  • Lead operational readiness efforts for new business initiatives, ranging from new supply & delivery locations, new customers, and fleet & storage expansion
  • Proactively share insights and drive process improvements
  • Engage with local and global teams to align processes and enhance commercial value

What we need from you

We are keen to hear from individuals with proven experience in trading operations, freight operations and chartering (preferably LNG or marine fuel/bunkering). You’ll also call on your Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply chain, Logistics, Engineering, or related field.

We also hope you possess the following skills and/or experience:

  • Understanding of value drivers in LNG trading, LNG operations, Gas markets and Gas operations
  • Trading risk management knowledge
  • Strong forward and “big picture” thinking, curious nature and commercial acumen
  • Strong proactive and problem-solving skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Well-versed in technology
  • Fluent in English both written and spoken (Spanish and Dutch are an advantage)
