Summary: 

The Director of Software Engineering will provide strategic leadership, guidance, mentorship, and engineering solutions across multiple project teams. You’ll be responsible for bringing new & enhancing existing digital products to market as well as design & invest in test automation solutions. To do this, you’ll need to set technical direction, identify/coordinate risk, identify efficiency gains, and influence priority across teams and vendors. In addition to these efforts, you’ll help to shape architectural strategy, design and coordinate test automation needs, manage resources, and collaborate directly with product managers and agile leaders on project delivery.

Essential duties/responsibilities: 

Lead 3+ software engineering teams, in collaboration with Product and vendor partners, for the delivery of i-Ready experiences that achieve our high-quality standards for our products and our test automation solutions. Manage risk, identify automation initiatives, and prioritize engineering activity across multiple scrum teams in more than one product area. Partner with relevant customers, identifying & socializing a technical and automation direction, proactively identifying and working to reduce production incidents, identify and measure key metrics to identify gaps or new tooling needed, and confirming universal buy-in for these efforts. Develop a hiring process to bring in top talent in the market, learning path for employees, provide career and technical mentorship, and drive the review process for a team of engineers (on-site and distributed). Deliver strategic software and automated testing solutions that are high quality, easily to maintain, can uncover problems related to any aspect of the system/environment, encourage re-use, flexible, and can be easily used by non-technical parties. Work with your team to implement engineering best practices, trends, and technical solutions to resolve future challenges related to any aspect of the product’s interoperability with devices, systems, services, and infrastructure. Drive technology department level (CTO projects), company-wide strategic initiatives, initiate and drive department-level goals, and special projects. Influence engineering direction outside your immediate area of ownership. Working with Product, influence roadmaps, test automation initiatives, and product strategy. Own budget asks for your area, providing those as inputs to the overall budget.

Required Job Skills and Abilities: 

Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) with experience in working with and contributing to a highly collaborative culture. Able to facilitate a meeting by providing an agenda, keeping the conversation on track, and identifying next steps for attendees. A strong desire for self-development and the mentoring of team members and peers. Ability to stay current on trends and technology related to web, mobile, test automation, and UX, sharing with others regularly. Proven experience in managing highly performing engineering teams within an agile culture. Strong analytical skills with an ability to parse multiple data points across different projects and find the proper context for decision making. Ability to build a strong relationship with outside vendor(s). Ability to build and broadly disseminate technical and automation roadmaps/visions. Ability to build creative staffing plans including total dollar impact. Ability to influence partners within the Technology organization and beyond. Ability to manage heavy context switching throughout the day.

Required Education and Experience: 

Master’s in Computer Science preferred 6+ years in an Engineering (Dev or SDET) Leadership position 10+ years of industry experience
