Director of Engineering, Commerce 

Kajabi is looking for an experienced and strategic Director of Software Engineering to lead the Kajabi Platform product. This pivotal leadership role is focused on building and scaling our checkout and embedded payment solutions for creators, leveraging platforms like Stripe (including white-labeled/custom Stripe Connect solutions) and PayPal to provide a world-class payment experience for our creators and their customers.

As the engineering leader for Kajabi Payments, you'll own the technical vision, architecture, and execution of our payment systems. You'll lead a team of talented engineers and work closely with the Product, Finance, Legal, Compliance, and Customer Experience teams to ensure Kajabi Payments is performant, scalable, and compliant.

The Impact You Will Make

As a Director of Engineering, you will: 

• Lead Kajabi Payments Engineering: Drive the design, development, and operation of Kajabi's integrated payment systems. Own all aspects of the payment lifecycle, including onboarding, payouts, refunds, chargebacks, reporting, compliance, and fraud prevention.
• Stripe & PayPal Integration: Lead advanced implementations of Stripe Connect and PayPal, optimizing for creator experience and reliability. 
• Platform Ownership: Ensure Kajabi Checkout and Payments is a robust, secure, and scalable platform that supports thousands of creators and handles millions in monthly volume.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Product, Compliance, Finance, and Customer Experience teams to align technical execution with business goals, legal requirements, and user needs.
• Risk, Compliance & Security: Work closely with Legal and Compliance teams to ensure alignment with PCI-DSS, GDPR, and global payment regulations. Proactively address fraud detection, risk scoring, and other payment processes.
• Innovation & Optimization: Identify opportunities to improve authorization rates, reduce transaction costs, streamline onboarding, reduce risk, and deliver valuable financial tools to creators.
• Team Leadership: Grow and mentor a team of engineers. Build a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and strong technical ownership. You will be responsible for leading an established team of senior engineers as they continue to innovate and build the best-in-class payment processing system.

Attributes for Success

• 10+ years in software engineering, with at least 5 years of experience leading engineering teams. Leadership experience in the payments or fintech space would be ideal. leading engineering teams in payments or fintech.
• Proven experience building and scaling payment platforms using Stripe Connect (Custom, Standard or Express) and PayPal integrations.
• Deep understanding of payment workflows: merchant onboarding, escrow/payouts, dispute resolution, fraud detection, and compliance requirements.
• Experience with white-labeled or embedded finance systems and third-party platform risk considerations.
• Strong system design and architecture background, especially in high-availability, secure, and transaction-heavy systems.
• Knowledge of KYC/AML, 1099 tax reporting, and international payment regulations.
• Hands-on experience with modern backend stacks and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, Ruby on Rails, etc.).
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, set vision, and execute in a fast-paced startup environment.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

In-Office Requirement Statement

We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we're not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection. 

This role will need to be in the office for in-person collaboration 3-4 times a quarter and therefore is best situated in the Western Time zones.

Pay Range

At Kajabi we believe the workplace should be equitable, inclusive, and inspiring for every employee. In an effort to provide greater transparency, we are sharing the base salary range for this position. The position is also eligible for equity. Final salary is based on a number of factors including location, travel, relevant prior experience, or particular skills and expertise.

$200,000—$237,500 + equity + bonus
