Director, Data Science and A.I.

Nerdy is seeking a highly skilled Director, Data Science and A.I. to lead a team of scientists specializing in a wide spectrum of A.I. disciplines—ranging from Machine Learning and Generative A.I. (GenAI) to Machine Learning Engineering. In this role, you will guide the research, design, and implementation of advanced A.I. methodologies to strengthen and power our customer-facing products and deliver cutting edge solutions including supercharging our tutors using A.I., finding the best tutor for a student, and creating an A.I. layer that ties together human driven and AI powered learning.

Your team will play a critical part in building cutting-edge tools for students, tutors, and teachers. You’ll collaborate closely with product leaders, software engineers, and both internal and external partners to develop innovative solutions. Your work will empower Nerdys’ developer teams to confidently leverage A.I., ultimately enhancing the learning journey for students and educators.

Key Responsibilities:

• Build, launch, and operate customer facing models that create impact for learners, tutors, parents, and teachers. 
• Lead, mentor, and expand Data Science and A.I. team comprising experts in Machine Learning, and Generative A.I. while being a player coach. 
• Establish the team’s long-term research strategy and execution roadmap to solve complex A.I. challenges that deliver customer facing impact.
• Partner with software engineers and Product Leaders to create and integrate A.I. into our product suite.
• Be the face of AI in the company with the ability to cut through the noise and focus us on the relevant trends.
• Understand and appreciate that Nerdy is an apolitical company and that we can have the largest impact if we are united in our focus on helping people learn and not divided or distracted by advancing unrelated causes.

Qualifications: 

• 5+ years of successful leadership experience . 
• At-scale technical architecture - you’ve designed and built complex yet performant systems. 
• Agile Data Science development (Scrum or Kanban).
• Ability to understand when to experiment and run fast, and when to build robust systems.
• A strong desire to learn and a passion for educational technology.
• Strong communication both verbal and written.
