Job Summary
The Director of Communications works with firm leadership to develop and implement results-driven
strategies to raise the visibility of the firm, its practices, and its lawyers, as well as manage and enhance
the public profile of the firm.


Key Priorities
The Director is responsible for:

  • Advising firm leadership on all strategic communications, keeping the interests of the firm front
  • and center;
  • Providing counsel on firm risk mitigation while assessing and grading the effects of action or
  • inaction;
  • Remaining abreast of key developments across the firm, including through proactive nurturing
  • of partner and team relationships; and
  • Producing and delivering outstanding written and oral communications.

Reporting Lines
The Director reports to the Chief Marketing Officer with oversight from the Chair of the Management
Board, Chair of the Executive Committee, Chief Operating Officer, and the General Counsel.
The Director manages a team of four PR professionals across the Northeast and Midwest and provides
direction and oversight of the firm’s strategic PR agency relationships in the U.S. and abroad.


Key Responsibilities

  • Utilizes traditional earned media, social media, content creation, and strategic recognition to elevate the firm’s profile and brand.
  • Cultivates, builds, and maintains the firm’s relationships with media contacts.
  • Develops strategic messaging, press releases, media pitches, and backgrounders to promote firm developments.
  • Leverages firm content, including alerts, blogs, podcasts, and events to generate strategic media and publishing opportunities.
  • Manages the firm’s relationship with PR agencies, including priority setting, opportunity vetting, and result tracking.
  • Provides crisis counseling, media training, and strategic advice to firm representatives; develops key messages and Q&As to ensure that spokespersons are well prepared for media interviews.
  • Leads the firm’s rankings and recognition strategy; develops editorial submissions and partners with the business development team to promote the firm’s credentials and drive brand recognition.
  • Plays a critical role in leading the firm’s social media program, including original content creation and targeted distribution strategies.
  • Works with firm leadership, partners and business professionals to support the firm’s internal communications program, including internal “good news” announcements.
  • Provides strategic support and editorial guidance to the firm’s thought leadership program.
  • Experienced in utilizing media database platforms and other research tools.
  • Implements business technology tools and strengthens processes to mitigate risk and increase knowledge sharing, efficiency, data quality, and impact across all operations and systems.
  • Manages, develops and supports the firm’s Communications team.

Qualifications

Proven Skills in the Following

  • Communications. Proven communications and public relations experience with a strong background in media relations and content creation. Proven strengths communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Representing the Firm. Ability to represent the firm with integrity and professionalism, consistently acting in an ethical manner. Experience with crisis management and a demonstrated ability to navigate sensitive situations that give rise to media attention.
  • Existing Media Relationships. Record of effective relationships with contacts at top-tier national and industry media outlets. Familiarity with legal concepts as relevant to legal public relations.
  • Project Management. Demonstrated ability to manage projects and campaigns while adapting to changing priorities. Ability to lead others in developing and executing on initiatives and large-scale projects.
  • People Management. Ability to motivate others and build effective and cooperative work teams. Seasoned experience in managing teams, hiring, training, assigning work, managing performance, and providing coaching.

Education & Experience

The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in communications, public relations, journalism, or
a related field.


The position requires a minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant experience with a record of leadership,
achievement, and management acumen.


Law firm or legal-related experience is highly preferred. Public relations agency and/or journalism
experience desirable.

Our Firm is committed to fair and equitable compensation practice in accordance with applicable laws. The salary range for this position is $215,000 – $283,000. Additional compensation may include a discretionary bonus. The salary for this position may vary based on location, market data, an applicant’s skills and prior experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other factors.
