About the role

The Communications & Public Relations Director role develops and executes a comprehensive corporate communications strategy. The director shapes and amplifies a compelling corporate narrative, builds and maintains strong media relationships, and drives engagement with key stakeholders. This position establishes robust internal and external communications frameworks, supports crisis management, and reinforces corporate thought leadership to ensure cohesive and effective messaging across the organization. 

What you'll do

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive corporate communications strategy aligned with Unlock’s mission and goals. 
  • Craft and refine key messaging that articulates the company's value proposition to varied audiences, including customers, partners, investors, employees and media. 
  • Monitor industry trends, regulatory environment and public sentiment to anticipate and manage potential reputational risks. 
  • Develop crisis communication plans, ensuring rapid and transparent responses to issues. 
  • Identify strategic initiatives including securing speaking opportunities, appearances and quotes for executives at key industry events and publications. 
  • Lead executive media training, overseeing creation of articles, speeches and other content.  
  • Develop internal communication plans to share values-driven messaging for employees via staff meetings, trainings, company-wide events, newsletters, announcements etc.  
  • Oversee community relations and partnership strategies for the company, building relationships with relevant organizations and identifying volunteer and charitable opportunities 
  • Build and nurture public relationships with national, regional, and industry-specific media outlets to secure consistent, high-quality coverage. 
  • Proactively identify and manage PR opportunities, including press releases, media pitches, and thought leadership placements. 
  • Collaborate with external freelancers and agencies to develop, produce, and execute dynamic corporate communications that enhance brand visibility and engagement. 
  • Hire, coach, develop and manage performance of all team members. Ensure Unlock values are adhered to and consistently demonstrated. Effectively manage budget and resources.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, PR, Journalism, or related field; advanced degree preferred. 
  • 10+ years in corporate communications or PR, with leadership experience. 
  • Proven success in developing and executing communication strategies. 
  • Strong media relations skills and established journalist connections. 
  • Expertise in crisis management and complex communication challenges. 
  • Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills. 
  • PC skills including working knowledge of the Microsoft environment and the ability to access, manipulate, organize and relay information in a meaningful way.  
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to effectively partner with leaders across multiple functions 
  • Ability to work in a high-growth, dynamic environment. 
  • Knowledge of financial services, fintech, lending, real estate or technology industries is a plus.

Target base compensation range is $150,000 - $175,000 annually. Actual base salary varies based on factors, including but not limited to, relevant skill, prior experience, education, base salary of internal peers, demonstrated performance, and geographic location. Additionally, Unlock's Total Rewards package is highly competitive, designed to support your success at work, at home, and at play – such as 401K matching, health benefits, employee stock options and paid time off.
