Summary:
The Daily Freeman is seeking a Copy Editor to join the team! The ideal candidate possesses a proven ability to copy edit various stories, ensuring the production of clear, concise, and impactful copy. This includes crafting compelling headlines and nut graphs that effectively communicate the significance and shareability of a story, particularly in the online realm. Additionally, the successful candidate should demonstrate proficiency in interpreting and utilizing metrics-driven data to inform and optimize coverage decisions.
Must be willing to work an evening schedule (2pm -10pm) including weekends and holidays
What you will do:

Meticulously copy edit a wide range of news and sports stories, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to AP style. Content will include breaking news, political coverage, and high school sports, all with a focus on the Mid-Hudson Valley and Catskills regions

Post edited stories to the web promptly and disseminate news alerts to keep the public informed

Prepare and organize both local and wire stories for print publication, ensuring they fit seamlessly into the newspaper's layout

Collaborate in the page planning process, ensuring a balanced and engaging presentation of news content for both local and wire stories

Proofread print pages with a keen eye for detail, catching any errors before they go to press
What you will bring:

A strong understanding of editing techniques and a thorough understanding of Associated Press (AP) style guidelines

Ability to navigate digital platforms and tools is essential, along with excellent communication skills and familiarity with the WordPress content management system (preferred)

Experience crafting compelling narratives in a digital format and a keen interest in understanding how news is consumed, shared, and discovered online.

Ability to work under digital deadlines in a fast-paced news environment and a strong desire to outperform competitors consistently.

4-year college degree in journalism or a related field
Benefits and Compensation:
The hourly range is $16.40 - $18.17. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
