Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation & Experiential Education - Boca Raton, FL.

Reporting through the Department of Campus Recreation, the Coordinator of Outdoor Adventures is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of a comprehensive outdoor adventures program. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Outdoor Adventures and Sport Programs, the Coordinator of Outdoor Adventures administers, organizes, and promotes outdoor experiences through challenge course programs, climbing wall hours, experiential workshops, gear rental, and adventure trips.

Summary of responsibilities:

Outdoor Programming:

  • Responsible for direct oversight, management and implementation of challenge course programs, climbing wall operations, and experiential workshops.
  • Assist with gear rental and adventure trips; and co-lead trips when necessary.
  • Oversee all customer relations pertaining to challenge course programs, from first inquiry through billing and follow-up; and maintain streamlined reservation and billing systems alongside the Coordinator of Reservations.
  • Develop and update challenge course initiatives including ground-based, low, and high element activities to best facilitate student, departmental, non-profit, and community groups.
  • Plan and implement specialized offerings including outreach events, incentive programs, educational tabling, and collaborative events.
  • Track and analyze trends in open climb participations and challenge course programs, including revenue generation, to make informed decisions about offerings and staffing needs.

Assessment:

  • Assist with development, implementation, and review of surveys for programs and events.
  • Assist with preparing monthly and annual reports related to Key Performance Indicators and Institutional Effectiveness and Analysis Goals.

Facility Operations and Risk Management:

  • Supervise risk management including developing and updating risk management policies and procedures for the challenge course in accordance with current industry standards.
  • Operate in accordance with current ACCT (Association for Challenge Course Technology) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards.
  • Manage day-to-day operation of the 35-foot climbing tower and 20-foot long bouldering wall through regular inspections and basic maintenance/repairs.
  • Develop and maintain procedures and documentation for preventative maintenance protocols. This includes processes for equipment (helmets, harnesses, belay devices, rope, etc.), climbing wall, bouldering wall, and low and high challenge course elements; tracking inventory and projecting replacement needs on an annual basis.
  • Ensure staff are informed of current safety and risk management procedures in departmental Emergency Action Plan; review with staff on an annual basis.

Staff Development and Supervision:

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate approximately 15 Assistant Facilitators, 5 Facilitators and 3 Lead Facilitators.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date staff contact lists, and post available shifts via WhentoWork scheduling software.
  • Assist with the development of staff training curriculum and facilitate training for technical and personal skills. These should include but are not limited to: group development, facilitation skills, risk management, wilderness medicine, and Leave-No-Trace outdoor ethics.
  • Organize and lead staff trainings, and maintain regular communication with staff regarding departmental updates, special events, scheduling, etc.
  • Document staff trainings to demonstrate attained competency and knowledge of concepts, ideas, and specific skills relevant to the role of a challenge course facilitator.
  • Evaluate the performance of employees on a semester basis and provide written and verbal feedback upon completion.
  • Assist with preparation of the department’s budget through outdoor adventure staffing and expense projections.
  • Collaborate with department marketing staff to implement publicity strategies and outreach efforts to maximize program awareness, visibility, and participation.
  • Maintain and expand relationships with Student Government, Academic Departments, and others.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

A master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience required.

Salary:

$43,014 - $44,000 per year.
