Job Title
Controls EngineerOperate in Controls Engineering sustainability and implementation in manufacturing. Accountable for providing engineering support, recommendations and delivery of solutions in area of expertise. This position is responsible for understanding and defining all aspects of controls systems within the company including but not limited to: evaluating control systems, defining control and operational data strategy with IT, performing cost benefit analysis, writing equipment specifications, equipment supplier identification and evaluation, equipment installation and commissioning, as well as programming. Accountable for productivity improvements, executing technology transfers, and increasing the efficiency of existing capital equipment in area of expertise.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Responsible for problem solving activities for routine issues that involve controls/automation systems, equipment safety devices and methodologies, and associated equipment with some supervision.
- Capable of creating & reading industrial schematics. Ability to integrate current controls with upgrades and/or add-ons.
- Key interface with manufacturers and integrators that supply controls/automation solutions to the company.
- Work with IT to build/maintain control systems and data management strategies for operations.
- Utilize experience of network architectures, communication protocols, server based SCADA for plant level and enterprise systems for increasing OEE, and integrating MES and ERP functions.
- Execute installations and technology transfers to meet production requirements.
- Assist with projects including training and guiding manufacturing and maintenance team members.
- Improve efficiencies by collaborating with maintenance and plant leadership, coordinating with IT services and cross functional engineering teams, to establish effective processes and procedures delivering results.
- Aid in the creation of business plans to support plant automation initiatives and projects.
- Stay connected to the trends in manufacturing automation and controls through industry publications and conferences; transfer knowledge of technology trends and methodologies to our operations plant wide.
- Perform detailed analysis for executive review, able to effectively communicate up and down.
- Work with various control system hardware and associated programming languages.
- Work with a diverse variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds.
Job Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelors’ degree in Electronics or related field and 1 year automation or controls experience OR minimum 3 years related work experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Controls or mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline.
Experience:
- A minimum of 3 years of Automation/Controls Engineering experience (preferably controls engineering) required.
- FANUC, Okuma, Haas CNC controller knowledge a plus.
- Experience on 3 to 5 axis machines a plus.
- Experience with various control system hardware and associated programming languages.
- Implement/apply controls strategies, networking, machine controls, motion controls, process instrumentation, HMIs, robotics, and safety methodologies in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience in SCADA implementation, data analytics, and MES applications.
- Experience commissioning equipment for plant’s capital projects.
- Technically proficient in programming PLCs & HMIs (ControlLogix, PLC 5, Factory Talk, Wonderware, Ignition).
- Extensive knowledge in electrical schematics, P&IDs, and experience with CAD software. Solid works and AutoCAD preferred.
- Working knowledge of NEC, IEEE, ISA, IEC, and NEMA codes.
Functional/Technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Technical knowledge in machine function, processes, control systems, CNC, PLC, servo and stepper motor drives, electrical, and electronic systems.
- Exhibit strong interpersonal and organizational skills, great attention to detail, as well as excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Technical knowledge of industrial networking protocols such as Ethernet IP, Profibus-PA, and AS-i.
- Must be able to work with a diverse variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
