Job Description:

Position Purpose

As a Control Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the integrity, reliability, and operability of all instrumentation and control designs within their assigned area of the plant.

Also, you will advise the Technical, Maintenance, and Production departments on process control matters to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation and compliance with provincial and federal codes and standards. This role will focus primarily within a 90-day outlook on supporting short- to medium-term unit issues and opportunities, with a portion of his/her time spent on the very short-term supporting emergent unit issues that threaten the business plan.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide process control leadership to the assigned area, including engineering, maintenance, and project departments

  • Lead engineering activities covering key areas of process control (base layer control strategies for manufacturing operations)

  • You will identify unit performance improvement opportunities and reliability risks and work with the area team to determine and implement cost-effective solutions

  • Key involvement with SIS (Safety Instrumented System) and IPF (Instrumented Protective Function) focal to review process safety requirements

  • Author MOCs (Management of Change) within the instrumentation and control discipline and provide technical assurance of plant changes by other disciplines and departments

  • Conduct or lead failure analysis and causal investigation of instrumentation and control failures or incidents

  • You will provide advice, leadership, auditing, and design of instrumentation and control activities to all departments

  • Network with other sites and company personnel to maintain a high quality of work and proactively prevent problems related to instrumentation and control

  • Provide leadership and training for maintenance personnel in the instrumentation discipline

  • Lead or champion instrumentation equipment upgrades and replacement planning

  • Manage the turnaround instrumentation and control plan and work list for assigned areas

  • Provide active support for the implementation of instrumentation and control work during turnarounds

  • As a successful candidate, you will be assigned to an asset and represent the PACO CSE discipline on a multi-discipline team

  • The ability to deal with multiple issues and to work collaboratively with a high sense of ownership is required

  • A broad skillset is required for this position, as is flexibility and willingness to learn new skills

  • Coaching and mentoring of junior staff are an expected activity to develop the site PACO CSE skill pool

Requirements:

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than your current employer

  • You must have minimum of 5 years relevant Petrochemical industrial experience (or equivalent) covering all aspects of design and engineering in the instrumentation and control discipline; preferably in a refinery/upgrader or large industrial facility is desirable

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required

  • Eligible for professional status from APEGGA as a P.Eng.

  • You must have solid skills in developing base layer control applications on one of the Scotford DCS systems (Schneider-Foxboro DCS)

  • Proficiency in Triconex/Trident PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) configuration and troubleshooting is highly valued for this position

  • A strong background in instrumentation, analyzers, and control discipline for industrial/petrochemical applications is also a plus

  • Good knowledge of safe work practices and engineering obligations in an industrial environment, including change management (MOC) work processes and procedures

  • Familiarity with maintenance practices, project scope development, turn-around, and long-term planning

  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve instrumentation and control problems with maintenance and operations

  • Utilization of problem-solving techniques to resolve design and engineering issues

  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline team environment consisting of engineering, projects, maintenance, and operations to manage the execution of the detailed instrumentation engineering design work and troubleshooting

  • Organized, thorough, and professional

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with peers and clients

  • Ability to articulate and defend a case for change or improvement

  • Coverage will be required for events such as unit upsets, start-ups, shutdowns, and turnarounds. Off-hours call out support when required
