Truth Initiative is searching for freelance content creators to join our mission to prevent youth and young adult nicotine addiction and empower quitting for all. We’re trying to change the way people quit and want you to join us.
We’re especially looking for content creators who can speak authentically to rural and historically marginalized communities with higher use of tobacco and nicotine.
The Opportunity
This is a paid contract opportunity. You will work hand in hand with our social media team (and potentially other creators, if interested) to develop engaging, impactful content.
We will have regular meetings, but otherwise the time commitment is very flexible, creators will work on their own time to produce content.
We’re looking for true partners—we want creators to be true to their style and voice. We will orient you to our brand and our mission, as well as provide sources and the history of Big Tobacco. But we want our creators to make the content, tell the stories, and spread the messages they want the world to see.
Duties include:
• Pitching creative content ideas and series concepts
• Writing briefs or scripts for your content
• Appearing on camera to share stories or insights
• Filming and editing videos
• Completing necessary paperwork, especially for content that includes others
About You
• You are at least 18 years old.
• You are based in the US.
• You have a portfolio or examples of content you have created.
• You are an engaging, clear communicator and love to be on camera.
It’s not a deal breaker, but if you’re a current or former nicotine user, we strongly encourage you to apply. Your personal journey can be a powerful tool in helping others on their quit journey. After all, you understand what it’s like to quit nic and that experience is invaluable while helping others on their quit journey.
Background check
We will need your written consent to run a background check before we enter a final agreement. However, those results will not automatically disqualify candidates. If chosen as a potential contractor, you will be provided with information on the types of background checks we conduct.
The Brand
There’s a lot of history and science in our work (we are a public health organization after all). So, we need someone who can communicate information clearly and accessibly, but can also keep people engaged and tuned in.
You'll be creating content for EX Program, our go-to-guide to help people on their quitting journey. It’s developed with experts and informed by millions of experienced quitters.
We provide science-backed, 24/7 support—all for free. We’re trying to change the way people quit and want you to join us.
Important Details
Compensation will be on a per video basis, up to $300 per video, depending on your level of experience. This is a freelance contractor role, not a full-time employment position.
Next steps
Please include your social media handles and links to other content you want to share when you apply.
What We Do
Truth Initiative is America’s largest nonprofit public health organization dedicated to a future where tobacco and nicotine addiction are things of the past. Our mission is clear: achieve a culture where young people reject smoking, vaping, and nicotine. The truth about tobacco and the tobacco industry are at the heart of our proven-effective and nationally recognized truth® public education campaign, our rigorous and scientific research and policy studies, and our innovative community and youth engagement programs supporting populations at high risk of using tobacco. The Washington D.C.-based organization, formerly known as Legacy, was established and funded through the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between attorneys general from 46 states, five U.S. territories and the tobacco industry.
More than 100 talented individuals with expertise including law, policy, communications, marketing, academia and research work at Truth Initiative.
