About Us:
As Commercial Counsel, you will have the chance to help build the commercial legal foundation by being Notion’s first attorney at our Tokyo office. In this role you will support our Tokyo, Seoul, and Sydney sales teams as well as our other cross-functional partner teams. We are looking for a team member who is excited about our passionate user base and is interested in joining a dedicated team that engages with our customers and vendors.
What You'll Do:
- Have broad responsibility for providing practical day-to-day commercial legal support for our Seoul, Sydney, and Tokyo teams
- Provide practical legal advice by applying knowledge of local and global laws, including privacy, data protection, and artificial intelligence laws
- Negotiate and independently identify creative legal solutions for commercial transactions, including customer subscription agreements and data protection agreements
- Identify and independently pursue improvements to our contracting processes
- Develop and revise contract templates as necessary, based on changes in our product offerings, organization, and privacy laws
- Have ownership of special projects to localize legal agreements
What We're Looking For:
- Must be admitted to the Japan Bar or be approved as a Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi (Registered Foreign Lawyer)
- 10+ years of combined experience practicing as a commercial attorney within a law firm or software technology company, including 5+ years in-house commercial legal experience at a software technology company
- Ability to confidently and independently manage and negotiate high visibility SaaS agreements with enterprise customers
- Excellent drafting, written and verbal communication skills and ability to adapt legal requirements in balanced, creative and pragmatic ways to facilitate communication at all levels of the organization
- Experience advising sales and marketing teams on global and regional privacy regulations (APPI, APA, GDPR, etc.) and the ability to incorporate evolving requirements into the customer facing agreements
- Resilience, resourcefulness, the ability to directly interact and build meaningful relationships and trust with internal and external clients and leaders, and the ability to make recommendations and decisions with imperfect facts
- Professional fluency in Japanese and English
Nice to Haves:
- CIPP/A, Certified Information Privacy Professional or equivalent
- Experience working with outside local counsel to support negotiations and special projects
- Experience supporting channel and reseller partnerships
- Familiarity using Notion
