Chief Architect

Position Summary:

MacroHealth has a rare opportunity to play a critical role in optimizing healthcare delivery and payments using applied intelligence at intersection healthcare and technology. MacroHealth is growing and looking for a Chief Architect.

As Chief Architect at MacroHealth, you are here to help scale out and lead our Enterprise Architecture team. This role reports to our CTO and is responsible for defining, designing and executing against our open enterprise architecture strategy, creating processes, selecting technologies, building systems and tools, mentoring other engineers and cultivating partnerships across the organization. The Chief Architect will have a broad scope of engagement with product roadmap, cloud technologies, site reliability and delivery excellence practices, and self-service/enablement tooling.

Key Accountabilities:

• A strategic thinker, an effective communicator, and a technical visionary who can guide the company's technical direction and inspire engineering teams to achieve excellence. 
• Collaborate closely with other departments, such as product management, sales, and marketing, to ensure that technical decisions align with market needs and customer expectations.
• Develops multi-year Enterprise Architecture roadmaps aligned with business and architecture strategy, priorities and processes.
• Assess emerging technologies and industry trends to identify high-value opportunities for innovation, competitive advantage, and technology selection to achieve target state architecture and decisions on improvements to current technologies.
• Conduct technical due diligence for potential acquisitions, partnerships, or strategic initiatives, providing assessments and recommendations to the CEO and executive team.
• Help development teams adhere to the principles, guidelines, and best practices of the engineering strategy. Foster collaboration, innovation, and a culture of continuous improvement within the engineering organization.
• Help evaluate and choose between alternative technical strategies, implementation methodologies and engineering practices.
• Manage and implement technical roadmaps for a portfolio of platform-focused enablement technologies and projects, including responsive applications, distributed cloud infrastructure, containerized workloads, databases, messaging, networking, source-control, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and security.  
• Drive engineering excellence by working with product development and security to establish best practices, coding standards, and mechanisms to ensure consistently excellent quality, reliability, and security in all products and services.
• Work on observability systems that enable holistic platform observability and drive down incident response and resolution times.  
• Play a critical role in managing and resolving major technical incidents and crises, providing leadership and expertise to minimize downtime and impact.
• Drive operational excellence and incident management practices that ensure the high availability of the enterprise architecture  and applications.   
• Provide regular updates on status of technical initiatives, challenges, and progress toward technical goals using clear KPIs.
• Lead the technology strategy for long-term technological investments in Business Intelligence and generative AI, advanced visualization techniques, and semantic data modeling.  Assess and calibrate opportunities against each other and available bandwidth.
• Measure Developer Experience KPIs, solicit and incorporate internal user feedback to ensure productivity tooling meets the needs of our developers and drive results.  
• Creates durable, scalable, reusable software frameworks using appropriate software design that empowers developers to focus on value-added activities and product differentiation improving velocity and quality of output across teams and functions
• Serves as the organization's go-to subject matter expert and evangelize internal products and tooling to drive adoption within the organization.  
• Provide leadership and technical expertise within the engineering team. Be a mentor and role model for Engineering.  Stub out new features and patterns to provide great starting places  
• Promote and represent the company at technical conferences, industry events, and in interactions with partners and customers.
• Help grow our team, by actively participating in recruiting activities.

• Proven track record of technical leadership and a deep understanding of the engineering process, tools and technologies for building internet scale geo-distributed software services.
• Proven experience implementing DevOps practices and establishing CI/CD pipelines to automate software delivery processes, ensuring rapid and reliable deployments
• Proficiency in GitOps practices and Infrastructure as Code systems (such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Flux CD)
• Demonstrated affinity for documentation-first engineering practices
• Demonstrated ability to partner closely with engineering teams and implement appropriate tools and practices that balance quality with productivity
• Recommend modern front-end architectures and deployment strategies (canary releases, A/B testing)

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• 10 years of experience in software development with a proven track record of delivering robust and scalable solutions in software engineering, responsive user applications, open architecture, interoperability, database processing engines, analytics and business intelligence, advanced visualization techniques, and semantic data modeling.
• 7+ years in a senior or lead architect role focused on architecting enterprise-grade products in distributed systems environment, demonstrating leadership in driving enterprise architectural decisions, strategic initiatives, and designing, building, and supporting distributed systems and large-scale cloud platforms in production with a proven track record of 24x7 reliability.
• Advanced knowledge of software architecture, application development, and technical processes with considerable in-depth knowledge in one or more technical disciplines (e.g., cloud, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mobile, etc.)
• Proven ability to create open enterprise architectures including integration of 3rd-party systems into a cohesive development platform  
• Led transformation to an elastic enterprise architecture based big data and service architectures, enhancing modularity and scalability  
• Practical cloud native experience with strong understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GC) and containerization Technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)  
• Expert knowledge of design principles, intelligence (AI) frameworks, business intelligence networking, SQL and NoSQL technologies, and knowledge of machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch  
• Experience with microservices architecture, RESTful APIs, and event-driven systems  
• Proficiency of network fundamentals (DNS, TCP/IP, routing, HTTP/S, websockets, gateways, proxies, load balancing, traffic control)  
• Experience building CI/CD systems and with multiple deployment strategies  
• Experience with cloud-based identity and access management (IAM), Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and Authentication/Authorization systems  
• Experience with observability tooling and incident management  
• Proficiency with scripting and programming languages including Java and Python  

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Experience with healthcare data (e.g. health payments, authorizations, eligibility, electronic health records)
• Experience with existing and emerging health care interoperability technologies and standards (e.g. X12, NCPDP, FHIR)
• Experience working for or with healthcare providers/plans/payers particularly in data warehousing and business intelligence. 

Location: Fully remote within the US 

Travel: 20% domestic travel
