General Summary: The intern will help the Technical Climate Change Solutions (TCS) team in assessing GHG emission reduction opportunities associated with various technologies and projects ranging from oil and gas, energy efficiency, renewable energy, landfill gas capture, waste heat recovery, carbon capture and storage (CCS), refrigerant management, and other innovative technologies. The intern will support the technical team in assessing, quantifying and documenting these GHG emissions in professional reports. The position will require interaction with various members of the industrial sector and businesses that are involved in activities that have associated GHG emissions. In this role, the intern will be working closely with the TCS team and will report directly to the Director or Manager.
Primary Responsibilities and Competencies:
- Liaise with clients to manage the collection and organization of relevant GHG data;
- Quantify GHG emissions reductions for projects, facilities and organizations in accordance with recognized protocols and standards; Establish a deep understanding of the technical and technological processes related to the activity being assessed and how these impact levels of GHG emissions;
- Research standards and best practices used for assessing and calculating GHG emissions and potential for carbon offsets; Interact and communicate with stakeholder agencies such as AER, AEOR, industry clients, and AEP;
- Document GHG emissions projects (e.g. preparing Offset Project Plans, Offset Project Reports, GHG inventories, etc);
- Use Microsoft Excel to build custom ‘calculators’ for greenhouse gas emission reduction calculations and economic assessments (i.e. must be proficient in Excel).
- Conduct periodic in-person site visits as part of the verification process;
- Facilitate the verification/audit of GHG emissions reduction projects by independent third-parties; Contribute to a positive and enthusiastic office culture!
Required Education, Experience and Certification:
- Bachelor's or Master's in Science or Engineering program.
- Scientific literacy with a basic understanding of the technological processes that lead to GHG emissions and the link between these emissions and climate change impacts.
- Basic understanding of carbon markets as well as a general understanding of both renewable and nonrenewable energy generation and their associated environmental, social and economic impacts.
- Interest in the impact of climate change and technical solutions.
- Strongly prefer relevant energy and environmental background with the ability to approach energy and environmental issues from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Skills:
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written,
- Some understanding of carbon offsets, carbon credits, carbon markets and carbon trading schemes (preference),
- Self-starter with strong work ethic
- Ability to work both in an ambiguous and structured environment
- Ability to multi-task and self-organize, and
- Proven team player with the ability to work independently and with others.
