Overview

DLH is seeking a highly motivated Biostatistics Intern to join a dynamic team of Biostatisticians working on the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Statistical Support Contract. As part of a collaborative team, the Intern will assist in executing statistical analyses for a wide range of experimental toxicology studies conducted by the NIEHS Translational Toxicology Division. These studies play a pivotal role in advancing the understanding of chemical exposures and their effects on human health. The Biostatistics Intern will work alongside experienced Biostatisticians and contribute to various research projects in the fields of toxicology, public health, environmental science, and epidemiology. This position requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to deliver high-quality work. A successful candidate will be experienced in statistical programming software, possess problem-solving skills, and be highly detail-oriented. The role offers hands-on experience in applying statistical methods to large and complex datasets, preparing reports and presentations, and assisting in identifying appropriate statistical models to ensure the integrity and reliability of results. Interns will develop skills in statistical analysis software, including SAS and R, and be exposed to cutting-edge research methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide statistical support for data analyses, including generating basic summary statistics (mean, standard error of mean, standard deviation), outlier tests, and executing statistical models such as t-tests and ANOVA on toxicological data.
  • Assist in the preparation and quality control (QC) of tables, figures, and reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Develop, document, and validate statistical code in SAS to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of statistical analysis.
  • Analyze datasets and prepare statistical tables for inclusion in reports or manuscripts.
  • Learn and apply advanced statistical techniques (e.g., Jonckheere test, mixed models, Survival Analysis, power analyses via simulation) to enhance analysis capabilities.
  • Assist with or lead independent research projects, particularly in the field of toxicology.
  • Communicate and present statistical findings to internal teams and external scientific clients, both verbally and in writing.

Qualifications

  • This position may qualify for remote work. Preferred location would be within a 30-mile radius of the nearest DLH office (Durham, NC, Atlanta, GA, or Bethesda, MD)
  • Must possess a Bachelors degree in statistics, biostatistics, data analytics, public health, or a related field from an accredited college/university.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited graduate program.
  • Applicants must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher. Unofficial transcripts will be required during the application process to verify academic performance.
  • 2+ years of experience with SAS programming.
  • Strong programming skills in R or Python, or strong JMP experience, will be considered for candidates without SAS experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex statistical concepts clearly.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders, researchers, or clients is a plus.
  • Ability to work remotely while updating the team and producing project deliverables in a timely manner.
  • Part-time, negotiable hours, potential to transition to full-time position.

Basic Compensation: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour

The salary offered within this range will be based on the selected candidates’ skills, experience, education, market data, and internal parity. DLH may offer other rewards that may include performance incentives and program-specific awards. An applicant’s salary history will not be used to determine compensation.
