About the role


Halter is a dynamic, fast-paced workplace where our Animal team is leading the development of Halter’s market-defining virtual fencing technology. We’re looking for a hands-on Staff Backend Engineer who thrives on solving complex problems and is passionate about building resilient systems that scale. This is a high-impact role where your code will directly affect the daily lives of farmers and their livestock, helping to shape the future of sustainable agriculture.


This role is perfect for someone who wants to remain deeply technical while also leading and mentoring a team of high-performing engineers. You’ll play a critical role in setting technical direction, driving quality and reliability, and helping the team grow as we scale rapidly.

What your day could look like

  • Designing and coding robust backend services that operate 24/7 in mission-critical environments
  • Setting the technical bar through technical leadership and thoughtful code reviews
  • Coaching and mentoring engineers across the team
  • Leading cross-functional design discussions and projects
  • Troubleshooting and proactively resolving production issues
  • Championing engineering excellence through better practices, automation, and system design
  • Participating in our on-call rotation to ensure farmers get the reliability they depend on

Who we’re looking for

  • A proven technical leader with deep backend engineering experience, ideally in Kotlin, Java, and AWS, who wants to stay hands-on.
  • Comfortable setting technical direction while contributing directly to the codebase
  • Experienced in scaling backend systems with high reliability and uptime requirements
  • A strong mentor and coach who enjoys developing talent and helping engineers thrive
  • Thrives in ambiguous environments and is motivated by ownership, accountability, and big challenges
  • A team player who contributes to a high-performance culture and values feedback, both giving and receiving
