Position: Full Stack Software Engineer (back end)Reporting to: Head of Value Stream - OperationsLocation: LisbonType: PermanentThis is an exciting time within Hiscox as the organisation is currently undertaking several large transformation projects. This role is within the Re & ILS business unit, which is initiating a programme to integrate, align and re-platform its modelling, pricing, underwriting and claims systems. The primary focus for this role is to be a key and influential member of our Re & ILS Software Engineering with a focus on Software Engineering, offering dedicated support to our various Innovation squads as we create new “Cloud Intelligent” solutions to add value to the business.We are looking for a strong engineer with expertise in C#, .Net, SQL, with DevOps and azure experience following Agile methodologies.Within this role you will be working in an autonomous squad with other software engineers, data engineers and SDETs in an Agile way to deliver the Product Owner’s vision quickly and incrementally.There are key scrum ceremonies to attend such as daily stand up but the squad is responsible for the timing of these and the flexibility of the hours they work in a day which coupled with Hiscox Hybrid working style between home and office, should mean that dentist appointments and school runs are made easier.Key Responsibilities:

• Backend Development:
  • Design, develop, and maintain complex backend systems using the Microsoft development stack (C#, .NET and MS SQL)
  • Write secure, well-structured, maintainable, and efficient code following best practices and industry standards
  • Ensure code is peer reviewed, unit tested, integration tested and delivered through automated pipelines all the way through to the live environments
  • Collaborate with the frontend team to define and implement APIs and data structures
  • Optimize application performance and scalability
• DevOps:
  • Work closely with the DevOps team to automate infrastructure provisioning, deployment, and monitoring processes
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines to streamline the software delivery process
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues promptly
• General:
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders and your squad to deliver value
  • Support engineers with your expertise and opinions within your squad to drive forward delivery
  • Work with engineers across squads to develop and evolve our architecture
  • Maintain legacy applications when needed

Essential Skills/Experience:

• Strong proficiency in backend development with a proven track record of building scalable and reliable systems
• Experience building and evolving API services, middle-tier and backend applications built in the .NET framework / .Net using appropriate design patterns
• Strong commercial Microsoft .NET/C# with SQL Server development experience
• In-depth knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases
• Cloud based(Azure) development and integration experience
• Have a very solid foundation of good development practices
• Understanding of DevOps principles and tools
• Working in an Agile, Automated Build (CI) and Deployment environments, supported by appropriate tooling
• Familiarity with frontend technologies (e.g., React, Angular, Vue.js) is a plus
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Advantageous:

• Experience in Finance, Insurance and/or Reinsurance
• Cloud Data platforms / Snowflake / Azure data lakes
• WPF (on prem)
• Experience in Front end development , React JS preferred.
• Experience with parallel programming, building highly performant APIs
