Slate is hiring an associate editor to help run our advice columns. We are looking for someone with high energy, creativity, a desire to engage with and grow our loyal readership, and most importantly, a love for Slate’s advice and a deep understanding of why it stands out in a crowded field. This editor will work across our advice franchises (Dear Prudence, Care and Feeding, How to Do It, Pay Dirt, and a new one to come) and must be excited to collaborate with the wider team of writers and editors.
A typical day for this editor might involve editing columnists, sparring with other editors on headlines, reviewing and responding to column performance in real time, and working on long-term strategy and special projects.
This position is based in Slate’s Brooklyn or D.C. offices, but strong remote applicants will also be considered. It is covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America East. The salary range is $69,000 to $80,000 a year.
Key Responsibilities
- Help manage Slate’s portfolio of advice columns with Slate’s senior editor for advice
- Editing to ensure that Slate’s advice columns remain must-reads
- Generating ideas for how to optimize our advice franchises and seeing those ideas to fruition
- Collaborating with writers, editors, and others across the magazine
Requirements
- At least three years’ experience on an editorial team, with editing experience
- A deep understanding of Slate’s advice columns and why readers keep coming back to them day after day
- Audience development and search experience
- Ability to use data to make decisions and strategy
- Top-notch organizational and communication skills
- Smarts, kindness, good humor, and generosity
