Position Summary

The Associate Director of Student Learning and Academic Resources will serve in the Academic Services and Assessment Support (ASAS) department. The Associate Director will collaborate with other NU departments regarding the creation and maintenance of synchronous and asynchronous institutional-level learning support and resources for individual and group-based programs for students and faculty. These will include but are not limited to the Doctoral Center, the LMS, course content, websites, the Commons, and additional areas within the Academic Success Center (ASC). The Associate Director of Student Learning and Academic Resources will also oversee the assessment of student learning within individual-based dissertation/applied project courses, review and update individual-based dissertation/applied project courses to improve quality, offer instructional and process training and mentoring to graduate faculty, and provide outreach to strengthen the doctoral learning community at NU.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate regular reviews and create new materials, hotfixes, and other updates for all doctoral sequence courses.
  • Serve on doctoral sequence course revision committees.
  • Create and update assessment and evaluation rubrics for dissertation and applied doctoral project courses and the Doctoral Record.
  • Develop and oversee initiatives to assess dissertation and applied projects for quality and rigor in collaboration with doctoral program administrators and faculty.
  • Collaborate with other academic departments to create updated support materials for all doctoral programs. 
  • Manage updates for student/faculty supports and resources within ASAS, the Doctoral Center website, and the Commons.
  • Collaborate with members of the ASC to develop new as well as revisions for doctoral support and resources.
  • Respond to student and faculty questions and inquiries submitted via the Doctoral Center website and other doctoral email addresses.
  • Manage Poster of the Year and Dissertation of the Year submissions and selection processes while retaining a repository of past poster presentations and Dissertation of the Year award winners.
  • Collaborate with doctoral students to provide professional feedback on poster presentations.
  • Collaborate with Associate Deans to identify President’s Circle student award winners.
  • Work closely with the Sr. Director, Academic Services and Assessment Support on special projects to advance the strategic goals of the department.
  • Oversee the US Fullbright Scholarship program to support student and faculty submissions for approval.
  • Coordinate and manage regular and semi-regular projects related to student learning and academic assessment, as needed.
  • Coordinate communication activities regarding student learning support and academic resources, as needed.
  • Provide strategic input for innovative support programs and resources in collaboration with key stakeholders, including Academic Services and Assessment, Support, Academic Success Center, Library Services, and partner offices, to ensure doctoral and master's student success.
  • Focus on strategy implementation for short-term outcomes.
  • Assist the Sr. Director by ensuring delivery and alignment of academic services and assessment support objectives, delivery of student centric services, and administration of special projects.
  • Serve on other University committees related to student learning, as needed.
  • Partner with Deans, Associate Deans, Department Chairs and Sr. Director implement new and enhanced doctoral programming that meets diverse discipline-specific needs and academic rigor.
  • Contribute to National University’s (NU) strategy by assisting the Sr. Director in identifying, prioritizing and building organizational capacities, behaviors, structures and processes.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • PhD, EdD, or other terminal degrees in a field related to the University’s mission or higher education, required.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in: graduate level-teaching and learning, graduate-level curriculum development and revisions, graduate-level assessment, doctoral learning support and resources, the doctoral process, and/or serving as dissertation/applied project Chair required.
  • Experience working in online higher education required.
  • Experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred.

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Working knowledge of learning management systems, including the ability to support others in their use.
  • Working knowledge of best practices in student learning in online higher education, including graduate education.
  • Ability and commitment to meeting established organizational and office deadlines on student learning-related projects.
  • Ability to participate as an active team member of the team and organization and work toward a common goal. Contributes fully to team effort and plays an integral part in the smooth running of teams without necessarily taking the lead.
  • Accepts personal accountability, proactively seeks resolution for personal limitations head-on; and supports honesty and respect towards others, the company and oneself.

  • Working knowledge, principles, and practices of office management/systems within a higher education environment, preferred. Demonstrates an understanding of underlying organizational issues.

Demonstrates the ability to focus on achieving results consistent with the organization’s objectives. As a leader, develops goals based on the organization’s vision, mission, strategic goals, and objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Work independently and foster a cooperative spirit within a large and/or small team of diverse cultures, while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and frequently changing priorities.
  • Intermediate use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook.  Experience using a Student Information System (SIS).

Travel: Some Travel Required, as necessary; may include quarterly college/school meetings, commencement, and conferences.

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency.
