Associate Director, Risk Management

Gilead Sciences is seeking an Associate Director, Risk Management to join its Risk Management & Insurance team. The Associate Director will provide counsel, advice, and reporting on a broad spectrum of risk-related issues. The primary responsibility of this position is to lead the continued evolution of Gilead’s casualty insurance programs and associated risk control activities, aimed at minimizing risks to our business. The ideal candidate will be an energetic and motivated self-starter, with significant experience in managing large multinational insurance programs. We are looking for someone that has successfully demonstrated an ability to actively engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify, assess, and mitigate a complex set of risks. This position will report to the Director, Risk Management.

This position is based in Foster City, CA and requires on-site attendance at least 3 days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Independently manage all aspects of insurance related to casualty risks, including the collection of exposure data, ad-hoc risk analysis, recommendation and placement of insurance or self-insurance program structures, management of claims in partnership with internal and external counsel, and preparation of loss reports
  • Identify areas of risk mitigation improvement and make data-supported recommendations that are understandable to a broad range of audiences!
  • Provide expert-level assistance in negotiations of insurance and indemnity provisions in contracts.
  • Regularly collaborate with various internal stakeholders to minimize risk to Gilead.
  • Ensure brokers and claim administrators meet performance expectations.
  • Consistently maintain proper internal controls and ensure compliance with worldwide insurance laws and regulations, internal company policies and contractual obligations
  • Perform timely and accurate ad hoc reporting and analyses as required.
  • Actively participate in cross-functional projects and lead department projects of varying complexities
  • Prepare and present internal and external presentations, including to senior management and insurers.
  • Participate in on-site visits, domestically and internationally, to assess casualty risks.
  • Manage payment of invoices and resolve any invoice-related issues.
  • Lead efforts to maximize insurance coverage for claims.

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience and increasing responsibility in insurance risk management either at a Fortune 500 company or an insurance brokerage servicing large multinational clients.
  • Specific experience in managing global casualty insurance programs, including but not limited to General Liability, Workers’ Compensation, and Auto Liability
  • Experience working/consulting for a complex, global organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to work effectively with multiple functions and diverse audiences.
  • Highly motivated and proactive individual with a positive mindset, able to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment both independently and in cross-functional, global teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Solid project management skills
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance or Risk Management
  • ARM designation.
  • Life science, pharmaceutical, or biotech industry experience
  • Knowledge of and experience in managing Executive Liability insurance programs

The salary range for this position is: $182,070.00 - $235,620.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
