KREM 2, the TEGNA-owned CBS affiliate in Spokane, Washington, is looking for an Assistant News Director

The Assistant News Director is the heartbeat of the KREM 2 newsroom. The successful candidate will be collaborative, passionate about journalism, able to juggle multiple projects at once and vested in developing all team members.  

The Assistant News Director will lead the team by overseeing the day-to-day operation of the newsroom, consistently bringing the station’s More to Every Story brand to life, overseeing planning and execution for sweeps content and station initiatives and playing an important role in recruiting efforts. 

This is a full-time, salary position that reports to KREM’s News Director.

Salary range is $75,000 to $90,000 based on experience.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with leadership to execute long-term newsroom and station strategies 
  • Oversee the daily editorial process 
  • Oversee the on-air execution of newscasts and special programming 
  • Coordinate aspects of coverage, from breaking news, to sweeps content, to news specials 
  • Implement innovative and creative ways for the content team to tell stories  
  • Search for ways to develop stories/breakouts that hit on the station’s More to Every Story brand 
  • Ensure that news coverage meets the brand, company policies, industry codes, FCC rules and station values 
  • Provide strong mentorship and coaching to all content team members on current assignments and career development 
  • Evaluate and recruit potential team members  
  • Oversee schedules for various work groups 
  • Evaluate workflow efficiencies and adjust processes and procedures as necessary 
  • Be part of nightside and weekend manager on-call rotation 
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including holidays, mornings, evenings and weekends  
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor 

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, related field and/or news leadership experience 
  • 5+ years of industry experience with leadership/management experience preferred 
  • Track record of quality journalism, high integrity and ethical decision making 
  • Passion for growing journalists and fostering a creative and positive newsroom environment 
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills that support the ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines 
  • Experience in producing engaging, content-driven newscasts and digital content 
  • Strong social media skills 
  • Knowledge of ENPS, Edius and Axis graphics a plus 
  • Exceptional communicator across all levels of an organization 
  • Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events 
  • Ability to work holidays, mornings, nights and weekends 

Pay Range

$75,000$90,000 USD

Benefits:

Regardless of participation in TEGNA medical plans, ALL employees and their eligible family members receive nine free virtual doctor’s appointments with a physician through Teladoc, and 12 free annual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician through Spring Health.

TEGNA offers a generous Paid Time Off (PTO) benefit as well as nine paid holidays per year.
