The role

The FT has a vacancy for an early-career journalist to work closely with Roula Khalaf, Editor, and Patrick Jenkins, Deputy Editor, on a wide range of duties and gain unique insight into the day-to-day management of a global media organisation.

The successful applicant will be delegated important responsibilities and will have to exercise complete discretion since they would have access to sensitive information and correspondence.

Key responsibilities

  • Draft newsletters, presentations, speeches and correspondence for the Editor
  • Prepare research for the Editor and Deputy Editor, liaising with the library and FT journalists. Ensure the Editor is briefed for meetings and events
  • Manage and book all travel for the Editor and Deputy Editor. Obtain visas when required
  • Diary management and assistant duties for the Deputy Editor

You will demonstrate polished writing abilities, an excellent understanding of FT journalism, tact and good judgement in a fast-paced environment. A high level of professionalism is required in communicating with people from within the FT and externally. Problem solving, organisation and a can-do attitude are key to this job.

The role would suit an early-career or aspiring journalist interested in a career at the Financial Times who would benefit from first-hand experience and mentoring with Roula and Patrick. While this job can be a pathway to a career as an FT journalist, the role itself involves a considerable amount of administrative work.

The role involves close cooperation with Sally Kennedy, the executive assistant to the Editor, who has overall control of access to the Editor and management of her diary.

The use of AI

Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism.  Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.

We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.

Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.
