The Role

The Assistant Director of Community Standards at High Point University assists in administration of the University’s student conduct process. Investigates, evaluates, adjudicates, and counsels students on disciplinary issues. Schedules student conduct and honor boards. This position is also an advisor to the students and faculty justices. Assists with selection, guidance, and training of student justices. Manages office budget and enters requisitions into Unimarket.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience and Training

  • Minimum 2-3 years of increasing responsibility in conduct administration and/or housing/residential life experience, including demonstrated experience with program development and implementation.
  • Experience with college or university conduct administration or residential communities preferred; law enforcement background considered.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state laws and/or residential life disciplinary standards and procedures
  • Ability to converse diplomatically with students and parents regarding sensitive matters involving student behaviors, conduct, charges and sanctions.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use crisis intervention skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to respond to students and parents regarding Student Guide to Campus Life policies and procedures.
  • Experience with Maxient software preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite programs.
  • Proficiency with Unimarket and Clarity programs.
  • Effective editing skills for written communication.
  • Knowledge of and experience with FERPA legislation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Administers the student conduct system, including review of incident reports and formal complaints; will adjudicate infractions and impose appropriate sanctions.
  • Conducts investigations of reported non-academic student violations, including interviewing relevant parties and gathering incident reports and other evidence.
  • Co-directs and advises the Director of Student Conduct and/or Senior Director of Student Conduct regarding the formal non-academic hearings and meetings, determines and issues appropriate sanctions in conjunction with the student conduct board.
  • Provides directives and adjudication for all non-academic disciplinary matters occurring within the University communities.
  • Provides counseling for students, particularly residential students, related to disciplinary issues; provides referrals to appropriate university departments, such as other members of the Office of Community Standards, CARE, Counseling, Health Services, Academic Services, Security, the Office of the Chaplain, and Academic Advisors.
  • Responds to requests and questions regarding conduct processes for students, parents, staff and others as appropriate.
  • Primary facilitation of the conduct and academic court hearing process.
  • In conjunction with other members of the Office of Community Standards, is responsible for parental notification for students who have been found in violation of the University’s policies regarding alcohol and other substances.
  • Maintains positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating effectively with students, parents, faculty, co-workers, and managers.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Community Standards and Senior Director Community Standards, performs training for CARE case manager, Resident Directors, Assistant Resident Directors and Resident Assistants on incident handling and preparation of incident reports.
  • Serves as an advisor to the student justice/faculty justice program.
  • Actively participates in and contributes to continuous quality improvement in the student conduct process, both directly and indirectly.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Conduct, Senior Director of Student Conduct, and/or Vice President for Student Services.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Complete discretion to determine fines and punishments (up to dismissal from the University) for non-academic violations.
