The Assistant Chief Engineer will assist with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department and with the maintenance of all broadcast technology and equipment at the station and transmitter sites.
- Assists in managing all aspects of the Engineering Department
- Assists in maintaining all broadcast technology and equipment for the station and transmitter sites
- Ensures station compliance with rules and regulations applicable to FCC, local, state, and federal, laws
- Works closely with Chief Engineer to implement new technologies and technical infrastructure for the station
- Assists with managing engineering and technology capital projects to the established budgets
- Manages and coordinates fiber connectivity, production setups, A/V routing and patching, audio equipment, graphics systems and editing systems
- Support and assist the News department in maintaining critical systems for live simultaneous newscasts
- Implement, install & maintain engineering systems and provide end-user support across all departments
- Evaluates, selects, installs, services and maintains station equipment and information technology systems
- Communicates with and coordinates equipment maintenance and training with vendors/contractors
- The possibility of unexpected and/or late-night calls for engineering-emergencies at the station
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements & Skills:
- Associate degree in Electronics, Communications, or equivalent combination of education and work-related experience a plus
- Minimum six years' experience with a broadcasting environment
- Strong communication, both verbal and written
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Understanding of linear video distribution encoding, MPEG Transport streams, and multicast and unicast video transmission
- Proactive, dynamic, flexible, self-starter with a positive attitude who can independently learn new systems or equipment
- Demonstrated expertise in analyzing and solving complex technical problems; in owning tasks and drives through to completion
- Knowledge of FCC license and reporting requirements
- Valid driver’s license
- Able to lift, carry, and move up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, work on rooftops and in confined spaces
- Must be able to work efficiently without direct supervision
- Thrives in an environment where teams rely on strong independent work and contributions
- Solid understanding of IT networking, client/server relationships, subnetting, and VLANs
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to function well under pressure, i.e. during live breaking news situations
- Ability to work extended hours, as needed
- SBE certification a plus
