About the Position
Reporting to the CQ Roll Call Managing Editor for Policy and Legislation, the assignment editor for budget and appropriations is a versatile journalist who manages a team focused on federal spending, with an emphasis on editing breaking news and enterprise on the congressional spending apparatus of members, committees, staff, as well as lobbyists and the executive branch and the courts.

Washington’s CQ Roll Call brings up-to-date news, analysis and insights to senior decision-makers on Capitol Hill. This trusted source of unbiased, impartial information provides authoritative, nonpartisan and accurate congressional news and legislative tracking tools to its subscribers. Through more than 40 print and online products, CQ Roll Call offers insight on the people and institutions that influence public policy and legislation, keeping readers updated on a weekly, daily and real-time basis with coverage of every legislative action in Congress via breaking news, bill tracking, and member profiles.
About You
You have a strong working knowledge about Congress, the White House, federal agencies, the Supreme Court, with special attention to public finances, spending and the processes and authorities that govern them. You have excellent news judgment and are passionate about policy and politics. You work collaboratively across the organization, and think expansively about journalism.
The salary range for this position would be $110,000-130,000 annually.
What To Expect In This Position
- Managing a team focused on the budget and appropriations process for the federal government.
- Coordinate reporters to cover key legislation and complete vote entry in the CQ database. Legislative tracking is a key part of the CQ business.
- Editing and occasional writing of the CQ Budget Tracker newsletter.
- Coordination and occasional hosting of the CQ Budget Tracker podcast.
- Writing and doing second edits for other team coverage as needed.
- Editing other newsletters as needed.
- Moderating panel discussions, webinars, and other newsroom and corporate events, including other CQ Roll Call podcasts.
What Sets You Apart
- Experience working in a newsroom in a senior role
- Knowledge of CQ and RollCall systems and processes
- A bachelor’s degree.
- 10+ years of work experience in daily journalism, preferably focused on policy and political stories about the federal government, with increasing levels of responsibility including 3+ years in management roles.
