About Liminal Insights

Liminal’s mission is to accelerate the clean energy transition by improving the cost, quality, and reliability of battery manufacturing. We do this by providing customers with better analytics and insights during production. Our breakthrough EchoStat® platform uses ultrasound and machine learning technology to supply customers with the information needed to accelerate production ramp-up, improve productivity and reliability, and detect critical defects early. Liminal has active product evaluations with major cell manufacturers and EV OEMs.

Our Culture and Values

  • We are dedicated to building a world-class, world-positive company.
  • We work closely on a foundation of mutual trust and informed decisions.
  • Our core values are trust, empathy, and curiosity.
  • We encourage personal growth, continuous learning, and safety.
  • We believe the most innovative teams are inclusive of and celebrate all forms of diversity.

Role

As an applied scientist at Liminal you will join a small, nimble team of engineers and scientists creating cutting-edge battery inspection equipment. You will be an integral part of researching new modeling techniques to better understand how material structure impacts ultrasound measurements and how these measurements can be used to predict battery performance.

On a typical day, you may: design and implement algorithms for extracting material property information from ultrasonic signals; research and build simulations of battery materials to understand how defects or noise might impact measurements; integrate physical constraints into machine learning models; work with customer data to correlate ultrasound sensor output to battery performance data; or communicate your work to a diverse set of stakeholders.

You value careful listening, thoughtful questions, and data-driven decisions. You are comfortable gathering and distilling information to drive the direction of open-ended projects. The ideal candidate will approach this work with a mixture of intellectual curiosity, thoughtful creativity, and methodical rigor. The ideal candidate also gets satisfaction from seeing people do great things with their work, has a learning mindset, and is excited to solve problems that have a positive impact on the world’s clean energy future.

Responsibilities

  • Develop modeling / data solutions to solve real-world problems in battery manufacturing and design.
  • Develop algorithms to extract material property information from ultrasound data.
  • Explore next generation applications to further expand our product offerings.
  • Communicate results and insights with our engineering and business teams to help drive decisions and influence product direction.

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD, or Master’s with equivalent experience (2+ years of algorithm or physical modeling research) in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM)
  • Experience in one of the following fields: computational chemistry, molecular dynamics,  continuum modeling, applied machine learning, or related
  • Experience solving complex, open-ended modeling problems using a variety of techniques from simulation, numerical modeling, or ML
  • Proficiency with Python or C/C++
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to drive research projects
  • Excellent communication skills to share your findings internally and externally

We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed.

Nice to haves

  • Experience with physics-informed Machine Learning
  • In-depth domain knowledge of phononics, ultrasound, battery modeling, material modeling and/or continuum mechanics
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience developing code for modern HPC / parallel computing environments

Benefits

  • Annual salary of $155,000 to $205,000 plus stock options, based on skill level and experience, to help you and your family build a healthy and secure future.
  • Group health benefits that provide support for employee well-being and preventative care, including comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • A retirement program that helps build future financial security through both traditional and Roth 401(k) options with employer matching.
  • Flexible working hours so you can be productive at the times that work best for you.
  • Generous time-off policy to allow you to renew and refresh through vacation, personal leave, and holidays.
  • For new parents, 12 weeks of fully-paid parental leave that you can take at any point during the first year.
