The Appellate Specialist will provide paralegal support to our busy Supreme Court and Appellate practice area. They will work closely with small teams of lawyers in high-stakes litigation. Our nationwide team has significant experience arguing - and winning - at the Supreme Court and federal courts of appeal. This position has a billable requirement of 1,650 hours per year and will be located in the Washington, D.C. office.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Cite check, Bluebook, proofread, and prepare tables for briefs, motions, and other filings drafted by Appellate practice area lawyers.
  • Prepare routine or procedural motions and documents.
  • Prepare and assemble PDFs of both public and confidential appellate documents, including voluminous joint appendices.
  • Electronically file briefs, motions, appendices, and other documents in courts via PACER/ACMS, the U.S. Supreme Court filing system, and various state docket programs and oversee preparation and service of necessary printed copies.
  • Use PACER, PacerPro, and various state online court docket programs to retrieve case docket and document information.
  • Assist lawyers with oral argument preparations, including creating case information binders.
  • Assist lawyers in joining the bars of various federal courts and obtaining pro hac vice status in various state courts.
  • Coordinate with Clerk’s Offices as requested by Appellate lawyers.
  • All members of the firm are encouraged to participate in our Global Citizenship program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Knowledge of court rules and practice requirements of U.S. Supreme Court, all federal courts of appeals, and numerous lower federal courts. Knowledge of appellate state court rules, particularly New York and California, a plus;
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills;
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with or without direct supervision and coordinate multiple projects;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to read, analyze, and interpret as well as draft documents such as reports, correspondence, and presentations for various audiences.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, PDF, PACER, ACMS, Westlaw, and LexisNexis; and
  • Sound judgment in decision-making, high integrity, and utmost respect for confidentiality.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Five (5)+ years of paralegal and/or trial preparation in federal courts preferred;
  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Experience with PACER/ACMS filings.

HOURS

Core hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Must have flexibility to work overtime as needed.

The annualized salary range for this position is $121,550 to $159,800 depending on the candidate's overall experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. Full time employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus. In addition, full time employees as well as some part time employees, will be eligible for the firm’s fringe benefits as they currently exist.
