About the Institute for Narrative Change at Protagonist
The Institute for Narrative Change at Protagonist is a pioneering organization dedicated to understanding information environments and the narratives that shape attitudes and beliefs. Our mission is to leverage our deep understanding of public narratives to engage clients, empower their progress toward justice, and advance healthy multiracial democracy. We utilize large media datasets (both traditional and social) to analyze public narratives, the actors influencing narrative landscapes, and public interactions with these narratives.
Primary Responsibilities
Data Analysis and Interpretation: You will support our work to turn often messy, unstructured data into actionable reports and presentations. While this internship will not entail hard data science, data fluency is essential as you will be expected to work independently on tasks such as executing simple analyses, building data visualizations and validating results.
Writing: You will contribute to the construction of clear, professional, and actionable reports for clients. A strong grasp of writing—using data as your underlying evidence—will be essential.
Staying Curious about the World: You will spend significant time engaging with material covering current and historical events, requiring a firm grasp of the breadth of perspectives animating public conversations.
Collaboration: As a part of a highly collaborative and creative team, you will be responsible for communicating clearly and effectively with the entire team—including presenting ideas to senior team members.
Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree or work experience in a field that involves both qualitative and quantitative work.
- Attention to detail: this internship will require you self-check your own work to ensure you are producing credible datasets, statistics, and visualizations.
- Experience with data analysis, including data cleaning, statistical programming, and visualization (using tools like SQL, excel, Tableau).
- Strong writing skills, capable of conveying complex ideas succinctly.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex problems clearly.
- Authorized to work in the US.
Expectations for the internship:
- Pays $19.00 / hour or the applicable local minimum wage rate, whichever is higher.
- Time commitment of 15 to 20 hours per week.
- Preference for location in Washington, DC.
- We will begin interviewing candidates the week of November 25, with the intention of an accelerated hiring timeline and a target start date of January 6th, 2025.
