About the Role:
We are looking for a highly skilled Mainframe Administrator to join our IT infrastructure team. As a Mainframe Administrator, you will be responsible for the management, maintenance, and optimization of our mainframe systems. Your role will involve ensuring the stability, performance, and security of our mainframe environment, as well as troubleshooting issues and supporting the deployment of mainframe-based applications. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high availability, scalability, and continuous operation of mainframe systems.
Key Responsibilities:Mainframe System Administration
- Install, configure, and maintain mainframe hardware and software systems, including z/OS, z/VM, and related operating systems.
- Administer mainframe environments including workload management, system updates, and patching.
- Perform regular system backups and manage disaster recovery processes.
- Manage system resources such as CPU, memory, and storage to ensure efficient operation.
- Monitor and maintain system integrity, ensuring that the mainframe environment remains stable and performant.
Performance Monitoring and Tuning
- Monitor mainframe system performance, including CPU utilization, memory usage, disk space, and I/O performance.
- Implement performance tuning and capacity planning to meet the growing demands of the organization.
- Analyze system logs and performance data to identify areas of improvement and address potential bottlenecks.
- Use tools such as IBM Omegamon, MainView, or other mainframe monitoring tools to ensure the health of the environment.
Security Management
- Implement and manage security protocols on the mainframe, ensuring compliance with company and regulatory standards.
- Administer security mechanisms such as RACF (Resource Access Control Facility), ACF2, and Top Secret.
- Perform user access management, including user creation, role assignments, and access permissions.
- Ensure that the mainframe systems are protected from external and internal security threats.
Backup and Disaster Recovery
- Manage mainframe backup strategies to ensure critical system data and configurations are securely backed up.
- Implement and test disaster recovery plans for the mainframe environment.
- Coordinate with other IT teams to ensure the availability and recoverability of data in case of failure.
Job Scheduling and Automation
- Configure and manage job scheduling systems (e.g., Control-M, CA-7, or IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler) to automate routine tasks.
- Monitor and troubleshoot batch jobs, ensuring they run without error and are completed on time.
- Implement and maintain automation scripts for recurring maintenance tasks and system health checks.
Application Support and Deployment
- Support the deployment and integration of mainframe applications.
- Work with development teams to troubleshoot mainframe application issues and optimize their performance.
- Perform system and application testing during deployments, ensuring minimal disruption to production environments.
Incident and Problem Management
- Serve as the primary point of contact for mainframe-related incidents, ensuring prompt resolution and minimal system downtime.
- Troubleshoot complex system problems and escalate to higher-level support as needed.
- Document and analyze recurring issues, recommending preventive actions to avoid future occurrences.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for mainframe systems, configurations, and procedures.
- Produce reports on system health, security vulnerabilities, backups, and system performance.
- Document troubleshooting steps, configuration changes, and any upgrades or patches performed.
Collaboration and Support
- Collaborate with other IT teams, including network, storage, and security teams, to ensure seamless operation of mainframe systems.
- Provide support to end-users and other internal teams regarding mainframe system access and issues.
- Assist with onboarding and training of new employees on mainframe system usage and processes.
Continuous Improvement
- Stay updated with the latest mainframe technologies, tools, and industry best practices.
- Recommend and implement system improvements to enhance performance, security, and availability.
- Participate in the evaluation and deployment of new mainframe hardware, software, and tools.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Experience:
- 3-5 years of experience in mainframe system administration (IBM zSeries, z/OS, z/VM).
- Hands-on experience with mainframe system management, job scheduling, backup, and disaster recovery.
- Experience with mainframe security tools like RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret.
- Familiarity with mainframe performance monitoring and tuning tools (e.g., IBM Omegamon, MainView).
- Experience in troubleshooting mainframe hardware and software issues.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with mainframe operating systems (z/OS, z/VM).
- Strong knowledge of job scheduling systems (e.g., IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler, CA-7, Control-M).
- Experience with mainframe hardware configuration and maintenance.
- Familiarity with mainframe storage management (e.g., DASD, Virtual Tape).
- Knowledge of system performance analysis tools and methodologies.
- Understanding of mainframe security practices and tools.
- Experience with automation and scripting tools (e.g., REXX, CLIST, JCL).
- Familiarity with batch processing and mainframe application support.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work under pressure in high-stakes environments.

- Certifications (preferred):
- IBM Certified System Administrator for z/OS or similar certifications.
- ITIL Foundation or other IT management certifications.
- Mainframe-specific certifications related to security or performance are a plus.
