We are looking for an experienced accounting professional to join our growing startup as our Director of Accounting or Controller (depending on level of experience). In this role, you will be responsible for managing the company's accounting operations, implementing and overseeing internal processes, and overseeing reporting internally, to investors, for audits, and reporting to governmental and tax authorities in the U.S. and where we have international operations.

About the role

  • Serve as the leader of our accounting function, overseeing and growing accounting team. Act as the main point of contact for the finance and accounting teams at brands, investors, and other stakeholders
  • Lead reporting on financial performance to brands, resellers, investors, and other stakeholders
  • Oversee the monthly close process, producing accurate and timely financial statements (monthly, quarterly, annual) in accordance with US GAAP. 
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition practices are followed, including managing deferred revenue and subscription billing cycles, complying with ASC 606 guidelines. 
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure financial accuracy.
  • Identify and implement new systems and processes, as required. Implement and manage accounting software systems to streamline financial processes and reporting. 
  • Lead external audit processes and coordinate with auditors to ensure compliance. 
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and partners, including banks, auditors, and tax consultants
  • Ensure compliance with all tax laws and regulations, including preparing and filing tax returns, and advising leadership on tax implications of business decisions
  • Location: US-Based. Remote, with some travel for in-person collaborative work. We also have an office in NYC for those who prefer to work in office.

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, accounting, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, particularly revenue recognition standards like ASC 606. CPA certification is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of work experience, ideally with prior experience as a controller or senior accounting role at one or multiple startups (series A and beyond)
  • Experience implementing new systems to improve accounting processes
  • International accounting experience or working with US company with oversees entities (e.g. cross border pricing, VAT, reporting, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial statements historically and projecting financial scenarios into the future
  • Demonstrated project management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Proficient with accounting and finance related software, including Quickbooks, as well as Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to delegate, balance, and prioritize multiple projects at a time

The expected annual base salary range for this position is $150,000 - $190,000 . Compensation varies based on a variety of factors which include (but aren’t limited to) such as role level, skills and competencies, qualifications, knowledge, location, and experience. In addition to base pay, certain roles are eligible for equity as well, and all employees are eligible for a full benefits package including employee and dependent healthcare and 401(k) enrollment.

Our team of over 50 employees is currently remote-first, with an office in NYC and optional in-person work for those located in the area. We have company offsites twice a year to bring the full team together in person, and occasional travel is expected as part of the job.
