A day in the life:

  • The Web Development Manager (Shopify, Wordpress) oversees the web development division by managing the people, as a coach, leader, mentor, problem-solver, and do-er, alongside at the account level through executive, technical, and strategic support. This person is the go-to for “escalation” related items as they pertain to clients and internal team members, jumping in to support, coach, do, and mentor while ensuring client retention, employee retention, and product quality metrics remain healthy.

Responsibilities:

  • Escalation Support: As a web development manager, you will support team members and account teams to problem solve any challenges that may be present at an account and/or personnel level. This may include: development tasks alongside account dev lead to coach and train, face to face time with clients, troubleshooting challenges, and ensuring sentiment returns to healthy before stepping out. 
  • Technical Client Lead: Oversee kickoff of high priority client roster, ensuring account excellence across entire book of web development client roster. This may include execution, escalation, coaching and more. 
  • Team Management: Manage the people and processes within the development team. Responsible for team organization, and ensuring that the team meets project goals and deadlines.
  • Coaching: You will focus on coaching team members, guiding their development, fostering a collaborative and motivated work environment, and supporting their professional growth.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Main point of contact between the development team and non-technical stakeholders. They translate technical concepts into business terms and provide updates on project status.
  • Scoping of New Projects: Ability to define technical requirements, assess feasibility, allocate resources effectively and establish realistic timelines based on the project’s requirements. 
  • Performance Management: They are responsible for conducting performance reviews, setting goals, and providing feedback of web dev developers. They help individuals on the team align their work with broader organizational goals.
  • Resource Allocation: Development managers hire and allocate resources, both human and technical, to ensure projects are adequately staffed and supported, in coordination with Head of Operations

Role Requirements:

  • Educational Background: A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. A solid technical foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of software development.
  • Technical Expertise: A strong technical background can be advantageous. (Shopify, Wordpress). Development Managers who can understand and communicate with their technical team members more effectively tend to be more successful.
  • Leadership and Management Skills: Strong leadership, team management, and interpersonal skills are crucial. Development Managers need to inspire, guide, and support their team to achieve project goals.
  • New Business / Sales Experience: Experience scoping out new projects for net-new clients, and properly allocating timelines and resources designated to those projects.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are vital for interacting with team members, stakeholders, and other departments within the organization.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Development Managers should be adept at identifying and solving problems that arise during the development process, whether they're technical, process-related, or interpersonal.
  • Strategic Thinking: The ability to align software development efforts with organizational goals and strategies is important for contributing to the company's overall success.
  • Business Acumen: Understanding the business context and how software development contributes to the company's objectives is essential for making informed decisions.
  • Adaptability: The software development landscape is always evolving. A Development Manager should be adaptable and open to learning new technologies, tools, and methodologies.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a technical leadership role, such as a team lead or senior developer. Experience in managing software development projects and teams demonstrates the candidate's ability to handle the responsibilities of the role.
  • Language Proficiency: Bilingual- English and Spanish are required.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Client Retention and Escalation Management:  

    • Timeliness and clarity of project updates to non-technical stakeholders.
    • 90% Client Retention Rate; excludes forecasted churn 
    • Active engagement within escalation related clients to create plans to solve or save issues 
    • Decrease in active escalations QoQ

Project Timeliness:

    • 100% of projects completed within agreed upon timelines with clients across client roster; if timeline is not able to be met, establish proactive communication process across team and ensure clients and internal teams are all informed and aligned 
    • Average deviation from project timelines okay, as long as proper proactive communication takes place .

Quality of Deliverables:

    • Establish formal and effective QC process that limits errors and improves QC related errors MoM 
    • Client/customer satisfaction scores related to software deliverables and QoQ improvements.

Team Management:

    • Establish bandwidth related KPI metrics and standard across team to ensure profitability metrics remain ~ 30-35%, while maintaining maintainable bandwidth across team 
    • Ensuring team bandwidth ~7-9 WoW, with identification of bandwidth alleviation and support plan if outside this window 
    • Performance managing and DAP-ing relevant team members with speed and proactivity 

Team Development:

    • Develop team training roadmap with ~75% of team involved in trainings and skill development 
    • 80% Team Retention Rate 
    • 70% of Team Meeting Vital 5 Goals
