The bottom-line success of the company is impacted directly by the state legislative and regulatory environment in which we do business. At the extreme, legislative and regulatory changes can establish or eliminate business opportunities. On an everyday basis, the work of the State Advocacy and Supervisory Team obtaining timely product approvals, rate approvals, corporate regulatory approvals, and achieving reasonable compliance resolutions, among others actions, have the potential to impact MetLife's earnings.
The Opportunity
This role is important to MetLife's balance sheet and advancing corporate objectives. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MLIC) is very significant in terms of its size and impact to the overall enterprise. Many of our largest transactions involve MLIC. The New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) serves as MetLife's lead state regulator in the United States, hence our regulatory engagement with the DFS is of the utmost importance. Being successful in the job means delivering results that directly impact the enterprise's bottom line.
How You'll Help Us Build a Confident Future:
- Leading certain advocacy efforts in New York State. Will work closely in managing our legislative and regulatory relationships in New York, the home state of MetLife's largest insurance company, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
- Managing legislative and regulatory affairs in other assigned states.
- Engaging directly with state legislators and state regulators. Responsible for maintaining positive relationships.
- Assuming leadership roles within industry groups and leveraging those positions to advance MetLife's interests.
- Securing timely regulatory approvals and interpretive positions needed in connection with corporate transactions (e.g., mergers/acquisitions, reinsurance agreements and dividends) and product filings.
- Planning and executing political giving in assigned states. Works to make sure such activities are done in compliance with applicable laws and regulations with support from Law and Compliance as needed.
- Performing various one-off and miscellaneous tasks as assigned, including periodically assuming lead roles in enterprise projects.
- Serving as a Deputy to the Head of State Advocacy and Supervision.
What You Need to Succeed (Required Qualifications):
- Solid executive presence and ability to effectively interact with senior executives
- Able to operate with good judgment and discretion
- Well-developed communications skills
- Strong reading, writing and analytical skills
- Active and strategic thinker
- Thorough knowledge of financial services and proven financial acumen
- Familiarity with relevant laws and regulations and able to accurately identify the possible relevance to MetLife
- College degree required; advanced degree helpful (e.g., law degree or MBA)
- Prior experience as a regulator would be beneficial
- 10 years or more of relevant experience
What Will Give You an Edge (Additional Skills)
- Experience working at or advocating before state insurance departments, including the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS)
- Insurance industry background and knowledge of product knowledge preferred
The salary range for applicants for this position is $213,200 - $284,300.
