Job Summary:

The Summer Intern will be part of the Cell and Gene Analytical Technologies (CGAT) team within Vertex Cell and Gene Therapies (VCGT). Our team helps develop end-to-end automation methods for different analytical assays. This is a great opportunity for a candidate to learn about applying the latest automation-based tools for carrying out cell-based assays using primary human Hematopoietic stem cells. They will also have a chance to obtain hands-on experience with different laboratory techniques including but not limited to ddPCR, PCR, ELISA, HPLC, flow cytometry and other potency assays. As an individual contributor, the intern will work closely with members of the CGAT Team in Boston and help the analytical development team support stakeholders from process development. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with other members of CGAT team to coordinate analytical testing of cell culture material 
  • Routinely execute different molecular, biochemical and cellular assays using robotic liquid handlers like Hamilton, Tecan, JANUS, Bravo etc.  
  • Troubleshoot problems that may arise during regular operation of routine testing. 
  • Perform preliminary data analysis for samples run using the different analytical techniques. 
  • Be able to compile results obtained from routine testing and effectively communicate the same to key stakeholders. 
  • Maintain clear, detailed, and complete experimental records of the tasks performed. 
  • Work cross-functionally across multiple teams 

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate with a major in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline  
  • Familiarity and understanding of aseptic technique and experience with working with human cell lines/primary human cells. 
  • A strong understanding of cellular and molecular biology as well as separation techniques like ddPCR, RT-qPCR, PCR, ELISA, HPLC, Flow cytometry. 
  • Has basic data analysis understanding and displays high levels of curiosity in learning how to apply new technologies for cell and gene therapy applications 
  • Experience working with liquid handlers is a big plus. 
  • Strong organizational skills and high attention to details. 
  • Ability to communicate results both orally and in written format 
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States, now and in the future. Please note that Vertex does not provide sponsorship for internships or entry level roles within this part of the organization. 
  • Candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before May 2025
  • Candidate must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from May - August 2025

Pay Range 20.00 – 27.00 USD/hour
