About the job
The Upstream Scale-Up Engineer will be primarily responsible for employing advanced modeling and simulation techniques to scale-up and optimize cell culture processes. This role exists to ensure the efficient transition of processes from small scale to commercial scale, enhancing productivity and consistency in our production bioreactors.

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement models for scaling up cell culture processes from donor site bioreactors to bioreactors at various sites across the FDB network, ensuring optimal mass transfer and hydrodynamic conditions in bioreactors at production scale.
- Collaborate with cross-site Process Development Teams to translate laboratory processes to pilot and production scales processes, in the context of our KojoX initiative.
- Analyze data and generate comprehensive reports on process performance in large-scale bioreactors, identifying areas for process improvement for ongoing programs in the production pipeline.
- Plan and execute characterization study of bioreactor assets within Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies. This includes use of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models as part of routine equipment characterization activities.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in bioreactor design and simulation literature to enhance current methodologies.
Minimum Education Requirements:
- A Ph.D. or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering.
Minimum Experience Requirements:
- At least 5 years of experience in Process Development of Cell Culture processes in bioreactors or running production scale cell culture processes in Single Use Bioreactors, Bench top bioreactors and preferably large scale stainless steel bioreactors.
- Modeling and simulation of fermentation or cell culture processes, focusing on the impact of mass transfer and hydrodynamics on microbial/mammalian cell growth and performance.
- Proven experience with scale-up in a biotechnological setting.
- Proficiency in MATLAB, Python or VBA is a significant advantage.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Deep understanding of mass transfer and hydrodynamics within bioreactor systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills for presenting data internally/externally and collaborating within teams.

The Drug Substance Process Science organization consists of 5 teams: Cell Culture (Upstream), Purification (Downstream), Tech Transfer, Process Data Analytics and Material Science. With over 50 persons in the department from more than 10 countries, you will be part of a very dynamic and vibrant international organization.
The upstream group consists of a dedicated and skilled team of 13 scientists and 5 technicians. And we are still expanding.
